Wilson scores twice in Capitals OT victory against Ducks

ANAHEIM -- Tom Wilson scored his second goal of the game at 1:09 of overtime to give the Washington Capitals a 3-2 win against the Anaheim Ducks at Honda Center on Wednesday.

Wilson won it when he redirected a centering pass from T.J. Oshie. He has seven goals in 14 games since making his season debut Jan. 8.
"It just seemed like their guys kind of lost me and I saw the seas part, so I figured I'd try and go to the net," Wilson said. "Just tried to get whatever I could on it."

Martin Fehervary scored, and Darcy Kuemper made 21 saves for the Capitals (30-27-6), who had lost seven of eight (1-7-0).
Trevor Zegras had a goal and an assist, Troy Terry scored for the fourth straight game, and John Gibson made 36 saves for the Ducks (20-34-8), who were trying to win four in a row for the first time this season.
Zegras did not play the final 12:27 of the second period after getting penalized for unsportsmanlike conduct.
"Trevor is a highly, highly skilled kid, he's got a ton of passion for the game, he cares, and we're just trying to get those emotions into his game and not into the referees," Anaheim coach Dallas Eakins said. "He paid his price on the bench and channeled it in the right way in the third."

Fehervary gave Washington a 1-0 lead at 8:58 of the first period on a redirection from Nicklas Backstrom.
Terry tied it 1-1 at 13:01. He received a pass from Zegras at center ice and weaved through three defenders before scoring with a wrist shot from the inside edge of the right face-off circle.
"I don't think I'm doing anything different than I necessarily was throughout the year," said Terry, who had a 16-game goal drought from Dec. 17 to Jan. 21. "I think I've been attacking the other team with speed, and I'm kind of doing everything I did on that goal except just fine-tuning the shot a little bit. When you've been scoring, you just feel a little bit a little more confident, a little more loose, and it allows you to pick those corners a little easier."

Gibson stopped all 17 shots he faced in the second period, including a pad save on a redirection by Sonny Milano at 6:20.
Wilson gave the Capitals a 2-1 lead just eight seconds into the third period. Trevor van Riemsdyk stole the puck and made a backhand pass back to Wilson in the high slot, where he scored on a one-timer.
Washington forward Anthony Mantha was unable to convert a penalty shot at 1:06, and Zegras tied it 2-2 at 4:17 with his 20th goal of the season.
"When we're playing together and playing for each other, we can win some games," Wilson said. "Just got to start racking them together, and who knows?"

NOTES: Capitals defenseman Nick Jensen, who signed a three-year contract Tuesday, left in the first period with an upper-body injury. Fehervary sustained a lower-body injury in the third, leaving the Capitals with four defensemen. Washington coach Peter Laviolette said they're day to day. Defenseman Rasmus Sandin, who was acquired by from the Toronto Maple Leafs on Tuesday, was unable to clear immigration in time to make his Capitals debut. ... It was Wilson's first multigoal game since Feb. 28, 2022, against the Toronto Maple Leafs. ... Oshie has a four-game point streak (four goals, three assists). ... center Lars Eller to the Colorado Avalanche before the game Wednesday. ... Anaheim defensemen John Klingberg and Dmitry Kulikov did not play because of roster management. ... Defenseman Scott Harrington played 13:05 in his Anaheim debut. He was claimed off waivers from the New Jersey Devils on Tuesday.
