Colin White and Mark Stone each had a goal and an assist for the Senators (15-20-4), who have lost four in a row and nine of 12. Marcus Hogberg made 21 saves in his NHL debut.
"It's a good opportunity for me to show who I am," the 24-year-old goalie said. "It's a good test for me. ... It's nice to have it done. I think the boys played really good in front of me, helped me see some pucks."
Pheonix Copley made 31 saves for Washington. He is 8-2-1 this season backing up Braden Holtby.
"We're extremely lucky to have two [goalies] in this room that give us a chance to win," Wilson said. "Even in moments when we're not playing great throughout the night, [Ottawa] had some waves, they played hard.
"To have a goalie back there every night that's going to give you an opportunity to win, again, great guy, great teammate. We're pretty lucky to have both [Copley] and [Holtby], a pretty good team holding the fort down for us back there."

WSH@OTT: Lewington snaps home first NHL goal

It was the first time in Capitals history that two defensemen scored a first NHL goal in the same game.
"Our room does a really good job of recognizing those situations," Washington coach Todd Reirden said. "I know that they're really excited for what's happening. To me, it's been the story of our first close to 40 games now. It's been the development of young players and them stepping into opportunities and getting chances and coming through on them."
Wilson scored off a cross-crease pass from Evgeny Kuznetsov to give the Capitals a 1-0 lead at 7:12 of the first period. Lewington got his first NHL point with an assist.

White jammed a puck at the edge of the crease to make it 3-1 at 4:22 of the second period. Stone's wrist shot from the right face-off dot made it 3-2 at 16:30 of the third.
"Offensively, we're trying to generate more traffic, more bodies at their goaltender," Stone said. "One bounces in off of us and we get a little bit of a chance, but we also have to earn our breaks. We haven't been playing good enough hockey over the last little bit. When you tighten up defensively, that's when you get your breaks."

They said it

"It was awesome. [Bowey] and [Lewington] are both really hard workers and they do a lot of right things, so it's awesome to see both of them get rewarded." -- Capitals goalie Pheonix Copley
"You look at their goals, they're just breakdowns. I mean, we're giving up the middle of the ice. You give a team like that high-end scoring chances, they're going to capitalize." -- Senators forward Mark Stone
