WSH@OTT: Oshie records fifth career NHL hat trick

OTTAWA -- T.J. Oshie scored a hat trick and Alex Ovechkin had two goals for the Washington Capitals in a 7-5 win against the Ottawa Senators at Canadian Tire Centre on Monday.

"He was flying today," Ovechkin said of Oshie. "It seems like every time he takes a shot or makes a play, it 100 percent goes in the net or goes off a stick. I think their line played very well. It was nice to see him get a hatty."
Ilya Samsonov made 32 saves for the Capitals (4-0-2), who are one of six NHL teams still undefeated in regulation.
Drake Batherson scored his first NHL hat trick and Josh Norris had a goal and an assist for the Senators (2-4-0), who lost their third straight. Anton Forsberg allowed four goals on 16 shots and was pulled midway through the first period for
Filip Gustavsson
, who made 23 saves.
"We weren't ready to play defense out the gate," Senators coach D.J. Smith said. "We didn't track hard enough against their big players, [they] made us pay and Oshie gets three and Ovechkin gets two."

WSH@OTT: Batherson puts home tough angle shot

Batherson's wrist shot from the right half wall beat a screened Samsonov to give the Senators a 1-0 lead at 2:26 of the first.
Oshie took a pass down low from Trevor van Riemsdyk and scored to tie it 1-1 at 6:26.
Oshie scored his second of the period with a wrist shot from the right face-off dot to make it 2-1 at 11:10. Connor McMichael had the secondary assist for his first NHL point.
"[Oshie] did a lot of the heavy lifting," McMichael said. "He made a lot of great plays, and him and [Anthony Mantha] are great players. Playing with [Oshie], it's really easy and having [Mantha] out there tonight made it even easier."

WSH@OTT: Oshie nets his second of the game

Nick Jensen's point shot beat a screened Forsberg to make it 3-1 at 13:37. Carlson faked out Batherson at the point, walked into the slot and scored with a wrist shot to make it 4-1 at 15:43.
Norris' one-timer went five-hole on Samsonov to cut it to 4-2 at 5:57 of the second. Chris Tierney scored at the edge of the crease on the power play to cut it to 4-3 at 9:36. Batherson tied the game 4-4 at 11:16 when he outlasted Samsonov with a toe drag and scored short side.
"The more time you're around you get more comfortable, and it was just instincts," Batherson said of his second goal. "Honestly, I wasn't really thinking. I just kind of did what I did there, and I was lucky for it to go in."

Ovechkin finished a deke five-hole on Gustavsson on a breakaway to make it 5-4 at 16:27.
Oshie completed his fifth NHL hat trick with a wraparound with another assist from McMichael to make it 6-4 with 7.3 seconds remaining in the period.
"I thought he was really good tonight," Washington coach Peter Laviolette said of Oshie. "He worked really hard. He turned over a lot of pucks. I thought his line was good. But you could notice, Oshie was moving and making a difference just by the forecheck and turning things over."

WSH@OTT: Ovechkin wires home wrister from the circle

Batherson completed his hat trick when his shot from the top of the left face-off circle deflected in off Capitals defenseman Dmitry Orlov's stick at 6:32 of the third.
Ovechkin scored his second of the game with a wrist shot from the top of the slot to make it 7-5 at 10:46.
"It was a fun game for the fans," Ovechkin said. "Lots of goals, lots of action. We'll take the two points and move forward."
