TRENDING UP

Juuse Saros, NSH (7 percent owned):Saros played well until allowing a late goal in the third period and a goal in overtime in a 3-2 loss at the Arizona Coyotes on Thursday. Still, the Nashville Predators' backup has started two of three and three of the past six games in place of Pekka Rinne. With a 2.43 goals-against average, .922 save percentage and two shutouts, Saros, who's available in more than 90 percent of leagues, could be a good option going forward.

Jimmy Howard, DET (56 percent owned): The Detroit Red Wings have won a season-high three straight games, each started by Howard. He's been outstanding, allowing a total of four goals on 111 shots in victories against the New York Rangers, Pittsburgh Penguins and Ottawa Senators. Howard is 3-2-0 in his past five starts, allowing eight goals with a .952 SV%. Howard has started 11 of Detroit's past 12 games; he's lowered his GAA to 2.66, raised his SV% to .915 and outperformed Petr Mrazek (15 percent owned; 3-4-1, 3.64 GAA, .892 SV%).
Carter Hutton, STL (29 percent owned):Hutton made his third straight start for the St. Louis Blues on Thursday, the first time he's done that all season. He made 32 saves in a 2-1 win against the Vegas Golden Knights for his third straight victory. Hutton has been one of the better backups in the League this season, going 8-3-0 with a 1.64 GAA, .947 SV% and one shutout. Hutton hasn't allowed more than two goals in his past five starts and has allowed two or fewer in nine of 11 starts this season. Right now, Jake Allen (98 percent owned) is still the No. 1; he's 18-12-2 with a 2.57 GAA, .913 SV% and one shutout, although it wouldn't be surprising if Hutton earns more playing time.

TRENDING DOWN

Brian Elliott, PHI: It's not a question of Elliott being the No. 1 -- he's started the past 15 games for the Philadelphia Flyers -- but more that he's regressed. Elliott has two wins in six games and has allowed three or more goals in six of his past eight games. Elliott is 15-10-7 and has a 2.73 GAA and .910 save percentage. Backup Michal Neuvirth (6 percent owned) hasn't started since Nov. 28 and hasn't won since Nov. 2.
Cam Talbot, EDM:Prior to allowing one goal on 34 shots in the Edmonton Oilers' 2-1 shootout win against the Anaheim Ducks on Thursday, Talbot had allowed at least four goals in four straight starts. He has already played 30 games, has a 3.00 GAA and a .905 SV%. Those aren't numbers you expect from your starting goalie, especially one who played as well as Talbot did last season. Edmonton acquired veteran backup Al Montoya from the Montreal Canadiens on Thursday, which could lighten Talbot's workload for the struggling Oilers.

Cory Schneider, NJD: The New Jersey Devils have lost four straight games, and Schneider has started three of them. He allowed four goals on 33 shots in a 4-3 loss at the Dallas Stars on Thursday after allowing four goals in losses to the Washington Capitals and Buffalo Sabres in his previous two starts. Although he may get a breather in favor of backup Keith Kinkaid (3 percent owned) in the future, the Devils play their next five games against Metropolitan Division teams and Schneider likely will play most of them. Those are tough games, and it would be unreasonable to expect him to perform as well as he has earlier in the season.
