Week 9: Fantasy top 25 goalie rankings for 2017-18

Each week during the regular season, NHL.com has you covered with an overview of the fantasy goaltender landscape. With production trends, injury news and top 25 rankings based on performance and upside in standard Yahoo leagues, fantasy owners should use this information as a basis for roster decision-making.

Jacob Markstrom, VAN: The Vancouver Canucks goaltender got his first NHL shutout Tuesday, making 30 saves in a 3-0 win against the Carolina Hurricanes. Markstrom is 8-8-3 with a 2.41 goals-against average and .917 save percentage in 20 games (19 starts) and is available in more than half of Yahoo leagues (44 percent owned). Backup Anders Nilsson (26 percent owned) is 6-2-1 with two shutouts in nine games (all starts), but has had trouble putting together two straight impressive starts. Markstrom is a good option for fantasy owners looking to replace injured goaltenders Roberto Luongo of the Florida Panthers or Cam Talbot of the Edmonton Oilers.
Cory Schneider, NJD: The New Jersey Devils have been one of the season's surprise teams, leading the Metropolitan Division. Schneider is 11-5-3 with a 2.60 GAA and .923 SV% in 20 games. He's 4-1-1 in his past six games, allowing 12 goals with at least a .917 SV% in each game during that span. Schneider has had fairly even splits this season, going 5-3-2 with a 2.55 GAA and .923 SV% in 10 home games and 6-2-1 with a 2.65 GAA and .923 SV% in 10 road games. The Devils have been giving Schneider more goal support than in years past, and he has allowed three goals or fewer in 15 of his 20 games.
Scott Wedgewood, ARI: The Arizona Coyotes goaltender has started six straight games and nine of 11 during the absence of Antti Raanta (upper body). Even though Wedgewood (6 percent owned) only has one win in his past five starts, he's given his team a chance to win each game; in two of the losses he made at least 44 saves. His 3-4-3 record may be expected playing for the Coyotes, but Wedgewood's GAA (2.67) and SV% (.918) have been respectable. Raanta (21 percent owned) could start Thursday against the Boston Bruins, but he has had multiple injury absences. Wedgewood may be worth keeping, depending on your league format, as a third or fourth goalie.

John Gibson, ANA: The Anaheim Ducks defeated the Ottawa Senators 3-0 on Wednesday for their second win in nine games (2-4-3). However, it was Ryan Miller (25 percent owned) starting and getting the shutout. Miller has allowed one goal or fewer in four of his six starts this season and hasn't lost in regulation; he's 3-0-4 with a 2.02 GAA and .936 SV% in eight games. Gibson is 8-10-2 with a 2.97 GAA in 22 games; he had a 2.22 GAA in 52 games last season and a 2.07 GAA in 40 games two seasons ago. Gibson is a fringe top-10 fantasy goalie now, but could see his usage slip with Miller playing as good as he is.
Martin Jones, SJS: Jones has lost his past two games for the San Jose Sharks, allowing a combined nine goals to the Tampa Bay Lightning and Washington Capitals. While those are two high-scoring offenses, Jones still could be feeling the effects of a lower-body injury which caused him to miss games Nov. 28 and Dec. 1. His season totals remain solid (10 wins, 2.33 GAA, .923 SV%, two shutouts in 19 games), but backup Aaron Dell has been getting more playing time of late. Dell (26 percent owned) won both games in Jones' absence, allowing one goal in wins against the Philadelphia Flyers and Florida Panthers, and should start another game this weekend with San Jose having a back-to-back set. He's 4-3-1 with a 1.93 GAA and .933 SV% in 10 games and has a chance to steal starts from Jones, who has started 65 games in each of the past two seasons.
Anton Khudobin, BOS: Teams often ride the hot hand when it comes to goaltending, and that's what the Boston Bruins did with Khudobin (30 percent owned). He started four straight games from Nov. 16-24 and won them all. Khudobin is 7-1-2 with a 2.53 GAA and .922 SV% in 11 games. However, he allowed four goals on 14 shots in his first regulation loss, 5-3 against the Nashville Predators on Monday. Rask had started the previous three games, going 2-1-0 with one shutout. Rask is 5-8-2 with a 2.62 GAA and a .906 SV% in 16 games but seems to have found his groove again, which is good news for the Bruins but bad news for Khudobin's fantasy owners.
