"Outdoor hockey in Canada is what it's all about," said John Bean, president and chief operating officer of Calgary Sports & Entertainment. "This brings us right back to the roots of the game and we're so excited to be part of it and I can't think of a better location to pay tribute to hockey heritage than Regina, Saskatchewan.
"The Flames' connection to Saskatchewan is deep."
This will be second regular-season outdoor game for each team. The Flames defeated the Montreal Canadiens 4-0 in the 2011 Heritage Classic in front of 41,022 fans at McMahon Stadium in Calgary on Feb. 20, 2011. The Jets lost 3-0 to the Edmonton Oilers in the 2016 Heritage Classic before 33,240 fans at Investors Group Field in Winnipeg on Oct. 23, 2016.
The Jets will be the home team for next season's game.
"This is an incredible facility and I can feel already the excitement that will be here this October," said Mark Chipman, executive chairman, Winnipeg Jets/True North Sports & Entertainment. "I'd also really like to thank the NHL for giving us another opportunity to play in this remarkable event and for having the brilliance of selecting Regina and this wonderful facility.
"The NHL really understands how important the game is in Canada. They also understand how deep the roots of this game run in the prairies."
The game between the Jets and Flames will be the fifth Heritage Classic. Previous games were played in Winnipeg in 2016, in Vancouver in 2014, in Calgary in 2011 and in Edmonton in 2003.
Tim Reid, president and CEO of Evraz Place, which operates Mosaic Stadium, is a former resident of Edmonton and worked at Rexall Place, the Oilers' former home. He said the level of excitement for the 2019 Tim Hortons Heritage Classic is through the roof in Regina.
"I've been involved in outdoor games in the past, but I've never seen this level of enthusiasm," Reid said. "We've had everything from sponsors to hockey clubs to community groups reaching out to us endlessly to look for an opportunity to engage with this event. The enthusiasm is province-wide, prairie-wide and it's been surprising to me but when I talk to long time Regina and Saskatchewan residents, this is exactly what they expected."
Mosaic Stadium opened in 2017 and is home to the Saskatchewan Roughriders of the Canadian Football League. It seats 33,350 in its football configuration.
