WPG@CGY: Scheifele cleans up his own rebound

CALGARY --Mark Scheifele had two goals and an assist, and the Winnipeg Jets defeated the Calgary Flames 5-1 at Scotiabank Saddledome on Monday.

Nikolaj Ehlers had three assists, Kyle Connor had two assists, and Connor Hellebuyck made 29 saves for the Jets (22-12-2), who went 2-1-0 in the three-game set and have won four of their past five games.
"I think it's very important, no matter who we're playing, to win the series," Hellebuyck said. "There are a lot of good teams in this division and it's very tight, and I'm sure everyone wants home-ice advantage. So if we can continue to win series, that's going to put us on top. That's our goal."
Elias Lindholm scored for the Flames (16-18-3), who have lost five of their past six. Jacob Markstrom allowed four goals on 23 shots before being replaced at the start of the third period by David Rittich, who made five saves.
"It's not just this one," Calgary forward Matthew Tkachuk said. "It's been win one, lose one, win one, lose one, win one, lose three or whatever. Time is ticking. We've been saying this for the past however long, but the time is really, really ticking, so we have to string now a bunch together. We can only be frustrated for tonight. You can't let it affect the rest of your season because if we have any hope and any chance of stringing a bunch together against all these teams that are ahead of us, we have to dig down deep."
Lindholm finished a tic-tac-toe passing play with Tkachuk and Johnny Gaudreau on the power play to put Calgary ahead 1-0 at 2:24 of the first period.

WPG@CGY: Lindholm finishes off tic-tac-toe passing

Nate Thompson tied it 1-1 at 16:19 when Dylan DeMelo's pass deflected in off his skate. A video review confirmed the call on the ice that the puck deflected off Thompson's skate and into the net in a legal fashion.
Scheifele made it 2-1 at 18:13 with a one-timer off a pass from Connor on a 2-on-1. He then made it 3-1 at 3:31 of the second period when he converted on his own rebound after a setup by Ehlers.
"We have a lot of professionals, we have a lot of guys that have a lot of character and have been through a lot and have seen a lot in this game," Scheifele said. "I think it comes from that. There's no quit in us, we know what makes our team good. Sometimes we get away from it, but we know what to do to get back to it."

              WPG@CGY: Scheifele buries one-timer on Connor's dish

Andrew Copp extended the lead to 4-1 at 14:31 of the second, redirecting Ehlers' slap pass into an open net.
"It was a bounce-back game for everyone tonight (after losing 4-2 to Calgary on Saturday)," Ehlers said. "It was a bounce-back game for the team. That's what we do. That's kind of our playoff mentality, to bounce back after a loss. We've been able to do that really well this season. You don't want to lose games, but being able to go out and play the way we played tonight after a loss shows how special this group is."
Pierre-Luc Dubois beat Rittich short side from the top of the right face-off circle 1:04 into the third period for the 5-1 final.
"You know what? You could probably say we outchanced them, but their top players had better chances 5-on-5 than our better players, and they sealed the deal," Flames coach Darryl Sutter said.
