Nugent-Hopkins' 4-point night leads Oilers to 6-3 win

EDMONTON --Ryan Nugent-Hopkins had two goals and two assists for the Edmonton Oilers in a 6-3 win against the Winnipeg Jets at Rogers Place on Friday.

Nugent-Hopkins has 30 goals in 63 games this season, surpassing his NHL career-high of 28 set in 82 games 2018-19. He had 11 goals in 63 games last season.
"Obviously, I wanted to bear down a little bit after last year," Nugent-Hopkins said. "… I know that I need to step up a little bit offensively and help produce and still try to play that two-way game. But I think it just goes to show the way that we're rolling as a team right now, and individual stuff kind of comes from a team playing well."

Kailer Yamamoto and Leon Draisaitl each had two goals and an assist, and Connor McDavid had three assists for the Oilers (34-21-8), who have won four of their past six games and remained tied for third in the Pacific Division with the Seattle Kraken, who defeated the Columbus Blue Jackets 4-2 on Friday. Stuart Skinner made 25 saves.
Draisaitl extended his point streak to 11 games (nine goals, eight assists) and McDavid extended his to nine (10 goals, 14 assists). McDavid has six consecutive multipoint games but had his multigoal streak end at five.
Edmonton was 2-for-9 on the power play; Winnipeg was 1-for-3.
"We got the result tonight, which was nice, but I think we've been playing some nice hockey since Christmastime," Oilers coach Jay Woodcroft said. "In the last 20, 21 games, we've lost three in regulation; that means you're doing a lot of things right.
"There's mistakes that are made, when the game was 6-1, we made a couple of errors and there is always areas of improvement [but] I was happy our team dug in today and found a way against a tough opponent."

WPG@EDM: Draisaitl wires home his second goal

Mark Scheifele scored his 35th goal of the season,
Axel Jonsson-Fjallby
had a goal and assist, and Saku Maenalanen had two assists for the Jets (35-25-2), who have lost their past five games (0-4-1) and remained five points ahead of the idle Calgary Flames for the second wild card into the Stanley Cup Playoffs from the Western Conference.
Winnipeg hosts Edmonton on Saturday.
"I've never coached a team, I don't think, that was so undisciplined and took so many penalties," Jets coach Rick Bowness said. "You play a third of the game short-handed against that team, they're going to make you look bad and they made us look bad tonight."
Connor Hellebuyck allowed four goals on 24 shots before being replaced at the start of the third period by David Rittich, who made seven saves.
Draisaitl gave the Oilers a 1-0 lead at 2:06 of the first period, scoring on a one-timer from the goal line on a power play, and Nugent-Hopkins made it 2-0 at 1:44 of the second period when he intercepted a clearing attempt by Dylan DeMelo and scored from the slot.
Yamamoto extended it to 3-0 at 9:18 after receiving a stretch pass from Nugent-Hopkins, and made it 4-0 just 40 seconds later when a centering pass by Klim Kostin bounced off the skate of DeMelo before he stepped into the shot in the right face-off circle at 9:58.
"Anytime you're playing with 'Leo' and 'Nuge' it's pretty easy to get going as well," Yamamoto said. "I'm happy I got two on the board and an assist, but it was a good team win."

WPG@EDM: Yamamoto extends the lead with 2 quick goals

Nugent-Hopkins made it 5-0 at 2:26 of the third period on a power play after receiving a touch pass by McDavid.
Jonsson-Fjallby cut it to 5-1 at 6:22, scoring on a rebound from the right circle before Draisaitl restored the Oilers' five-goal lead at 7:27, scoring short side from the bottom of the right circle to make it 6-1.
Scheifele made 6-2 at 11:49 on a power play after Nino Niederreiter intercepted a pass by Vincent Desharnais, and Brenden Dillon scored at 12:55 when he dropped down from the left point and beat Skinner stick side for the 6-3 final.
"We said before the third period, to go out there and try and our best and try to build on that for tomorrow," Jonsson-Fjallby said. "I thought the third period was a little better, but overall, it wasn't a good game."
