WPG@MTL: Dubois buries overtime winner from slot

MONTREAL -- Pierre-Luc Dubois scored with 31 seconds left in overtime to give the Winnipeg Jets a 4-3 win against the Montreal Canadiens at Bell Centre on Thursday.

Linemates Nikolaj Ehlers and Kyle Connor set up Dubois, who scored on a wrist shot over Jake Allen's left shoulder after Montreal tied it with 1:24 remaining in the third period.
"It started with a nice play by Nik Ehlers to slow the play down a bit, which created some confusion," Dubois said. "And it's easy to miss what Kyle Connor did in going to the net, which opened things up for me up top."
Paul Stastny scored twice, and Connor Hellebuyck made 33 saves for Winnipeg (15-7-1), which won its second straight game and is 6-1-0 in its past seven.

Corey Perry had a goal and an assist, and Allen made 23 saves for Montreal (10-6-6), which is 1-1-2 since Dominique Ducharme took over as coach after Claude Julien was fired Feb. 24.
The Jets, who are 5-0 this season in games decided in overtime, did not have a defenseman on the ice when Dubois scored.
"Everybody's man-on-man, so if you've got two forwards and a defenseman both of those forwards are doing the same thing that if there's three forwards on the ice," Jets coach Paul Maurice said. "But if you look at the roster at the end of the year the guys who score all the goals are forwards. So we'll try to put as many forwards on the ice as we can."
The Canadiens, who also tried using three forwards 3-on-3, have lost all six games that have gone to overtime, including two shootout losses.
"I mean obviously we're trying to score goals and we had some good looks, some good opportunities," said Montreal forward Tyler Toffoli, who scored his 14th goal. "But we've just got to find a way to win some of these games in overtime here."
Canadiens captain Shea Weber said, "I think we're doing some good things, it's not all bad. We're playing a pretty sound game for the most part. Obviously there's a couple mistakes there. Mistakes are going to happen in games and you want to limit those mistakes, obviously, and especially early. We didn't get off to a really good start and Jake really saved our you-know-what at the start. He made a couple huge saves and let us settle in."
The Canadiens close out a three-game homestand Saturday in the second of a two-game set against the Jets, who began a five-game road trip.
"Our players showed a lot of character tonight," Ducharme said. "The things we didn't do well are easy enough to fix."

WPG@MTL: Stastny lifts a wrist shot into twine

Stastny put Winnipeg up 3-2 with his second goal of the game and fourth in four games at 3:39 of the third.
Allen was pulled for an extra attacker when Perry tied it 3-3 at 18:36 of the third.
"The first period we dominated, the second period they dominated, and the third period was pretty much back and forth and they scored a late goal," Stastny said.
Stastny gave Winnipeg a 1-0 lead at 10:39 of the first. He got behind Montreal defenseman Brett Kulak in front of the net, and Blake Wheeler's centering pass from the left side went in off his right skate.
Mathieu Perreault took advantage of a turnover by Toffoli to score unassisted and make it 2-0 at 15:25.

WPG@MTL: Gallagher nets loose puck from slot for PPG

Brendan Gallagher cut it to 2-1 when he scored on Montreal's only power play at 9:53 of the second.
The Canadiens power play is 4-for-8 under Ducharme.
Toffoli tied it 2-2 at 16:53 when the puck went in off his left skate after Nick Suzuki tipped Jonathan Drouin's wrist shot from the left point.
"It was good to get a goal back and keep us in the game," Toffoli said. "And fortunate to get a point but definitely frustrating not getting two."
NOTES: Jets defenseman Derek Forbort, who turned 29 on Thursday, had 11 of Winnipeg's 21 blocked shots. … Canadiens forward Josh Anderson missed his third straight game because of a lower-body injury.
