WPG@MTL: Ehlers skates in and wires home a wrister

MONTREAL-- Connor Hellebuyck made 36 saves for the Winnipeg Jets, who began a five-game road trip with a 4-2 win against the Montreal Canadiens at Bell Centre on Thursday.

Josh Morrissey scored 18 seconds into the first period for Winnipeg (24-13-3), which is 6-2-1 in its past nine games.
"We'll take the two points, a big win on the road," Morrissey said. "They played hard. You know what to expect against Montreal every night, but especially here. And considering they were on back to back, they worked extremely hard and put a lot of pucks to the net. We won the game, so obviously we're excited about that. We'll make some adjustments and be ready for our next one."

Phillip Danault and Paul Byron scored for Montreal (17-11-9), which lost 3-2 at the Toronto Maple Leafs on Wednesday. The Canadiens, who began a six-game homestand, are 1-3-0 in their past four.
Winnipeg outshot Montreal 18-9 on their way to a 3-1 first-period lead.
"We shot ourselves in the foot," Canadiens captain Shea Weber said.
Jake Allen, who made 23 saves, lost a second straight game in his first back-to-back starts since the 2017-18 season with the St. Louis Blues.
"I was disappointed with my first period, obviously," Allen said. "Other than that, I felt fine."
Morrissey gave the Jets a 1-0 lead when he took Mathieu Perreault's backhand pass in the slot and scored on a wrist shot that went in off the left post.
Danault tied it 1-1 at 1:40 with a backhand off a rebound of Tomas Tatar's shot.

Trevor Lewis made it 2-1 at 8:03 when he drove to the net and, despite being covered by Canadiens defenseman Victor Mete, got his stick down to tip in Neal Pionk's pass from the right side.
"He made an awesome pass and I got a piece of it and it went in," Lewis said.
Nikolaj Ehlers drove the left side and shot past Allen's glove at 13:07 for a 3-1 lead.
"I don't think it was a lack of effort," Weber said. "I just think we made some mistakes, and the mistakes were big, and obviously those are chances that we can't give up."
Byron took advantage of an unusual bounce on Jeff Petry's dump in along the boards to make it 3-2 at 15:14 of the second period. He shot into an open net when the puck caromed to him after Hellebuyck left the crease to play it.
"I get a little bit angry because I have no control over that kind of a bounce," Hellebuyck said. "I just move on, and that's kind of the story of this year, those bad] bounces. I just can't really afford to give up another one, so that becomes my main focus, shutting it down."
Andrew Copp scored into an empty net with 38 seconds remaining for the 4-2 final.
