WPG@OTT: Ehlers finishes Copp's pass for OT winner

OTTAWA --Nikolaj Ehlers scored his first NHL overtime goal to give the Winnipeg Jets a 4-3 win against the Ottawa Senators at Canadian Tire Centre on Tuesday.

"Personally, it's obviously very nice to not just get one in OT, but get the first of the year," Ehlers said. "The team, we battled our [backsides] off to stay in the game and get a chance to get the tying goal and give us a point or two."
Ehlers won it when he skated in alone and scored at 2:20 with a snap shot past the blocker of goalie Matt Murray.
"He can be so dangerous, such a dynamic player late in a game," Jets coach Paul Maurice said. "Just the speed to get into that hole and make the play that finishes it. We need him. We need him to feel confident and healthy and strong, and when he is, he's so very dynamic."
Winnipeg captain Blake Wheeler tied it 3-3 with 1:17 remaining in the third period and goalie Laurent Brossoit pulled for an extra skater.
"We made a lot of young mistakes," Senators coach D.J. Smith said of the final minutes of the third. "We're racing around, trying to score rather than defend. That's a learning lesson tonight. We lose a point and give a valuable point to them. You've got to close games out."

WPG@OTT: Wheeler strikes from in front to tie it

Brossoit made 38 saves in his season debut for the Jets (2-1-0), who lost 3-1 at the Toronto Maple Leafs on Monday.
"The first half of this game, Ottawa came out really, really strong," Brossoit said. "It seemed like they wanted to take advantage of the fact we had two games in two nights. So we weathered the storm, and once that happened, we started to push, and we have enough veterans and enough skill that it always feels like we have a chance."
Josh Norris scored his first NHL goal, and Murray made 24 saves for the Senators (1-1-1).
"Other than not taking care of the puck in the third period and overtime, we had good energy, we had good [offensive] zone time," Smith said. "We did a lot of good things tonight."

WPG@OTT: Norris scores on power play for first goal

Norris scored with a quick shot off the pad of Brossoit on the power play to give the Senators a 1-0 lead at 4:41 of the first period.
"The main thing was just shooting the puck. I haven't shot the puck at all before tonight," Norris said. "I had a lot of good scoring chances tonight, and one of the first ones went in. It feels good."
Chris Tierney made it 2-0 at 10:31 when he tipped Connor Brown's redirection of Nikita Zaitsev's point shot. Adam Lowry deflected Neal Pionk's point shot to cut it to 2-1 at 18:09.
Alex Galchenyuk scored his first goal with Ottawa on a one-timer from the right face-off circle on the power play to make it 3-1 at 11:47 of the second period. Kyle Connor scored over the outstretched glove of Murray on the power play to cut it to 3-2 at 16:12.
"We haven't had the best starts to our games. Obviously, that's something we're trying to change," Ehlers said. "I think we did a lot better today than the first [two] games even though we were behind by two. But it shows that we don't give up."
NOTES:Ehlers scored his 21st game-winning goal since making his NHL debut in 2015-16, second on the Jets behind Mark Scheifele (23) during that span. … Tuesday was the first of three straight games between Winnipeg and Ottawa. … The Senators' top line of Norris, Drake Batherson and Brady Tkachuk combined for 20 shots on goal. … Evgenii Dadonov's assist on Norris' goal was his first point with Ottawa.
