What's the best piece of career advice you've ever been given, or what advice do you like to give others?
I've been fortunate throughout my career to have worked alongside some incredible hockey minds and business professionals. Genuine people who took the time to teach and provide direction to my development. I've always resonated with the concept of actions over words, and I'd be remiss if I didn't mention two influential people who've embodied this throughout my career.
Scott Salmond, Hockey Canada: My first job out of university was working for Scott. He is the greatest leader I've ever known. Learning the value of leadership, camaraderie and team building from him has been instrumental to where I am today. I appreciate his time, knowledge, and mentorship in every conversation we shared. I wouldn't be where I am today without him. Thank you, Sammy.
My Dad: I learned at an early age that hard work, good character and doing the right thing will always get you to where you want to go. He is my morale compass. He taught me the importance of leading an honorable life that you're proud of, both personally and professionally. Thank you, Dad.
In saying this, my advice to others would be to know your skills, and then align yourself with good people. People whose values match your own and will continuously push you to get better. Stick with them, and they'll help you get to where you want to go. And most importantly, don't forget to reciprocate, your time will come.
What are your hobbies and why do you enjoy it/them?
For me, one of life's greatest pleasures is the game of golf. It can be extremely rewarding, but also very agonizing, which can truly only be appreciated by those who play it. It taught me etiquette and character at an early age. To this day, it has given me some of my greatest memories and has led me to meet some of the most special people in my life.
How would your closest friends describe you?
I think I'd be described as an eternal optimist. My friends can count on me to read the room, and steer conversations to a place of positivity. I love to make them laugh and create memories. I also think they'd say I have a high level of integrity. I live true to my deepest values and always try to do the right thing.
