WWE honors Gaudreau

As WWE honored Johnny Gaudreau during "Monday Night Raw" in Calgary, chants of “Johnny! Johnny! Johnny!” rang down at Scotiabank Saddledome, with many in the crowd wearing Gaudreau’s No. 13 Calgary Flames jersey.

Meanwhile, outside the arena where Gaudreau played the first nine seasons of his career, the shrine for Gaudreau and his brother, Matthew, continued to grow as wrestling fans added more mementos as they made their way into the building.

It was another addition to the outpouring of support for the Gaudreau family from the hockey community and beyond.

During the WWE event, Canadian wrestler Sami Zayn paid homage to Gaudreau by wearing his Flames jersey while entering the ring. Zayn, from Quebec, is a known Montreal Canadiens fan but didn’t hesitate to honor such an impactful player.

“I’m wearing his jersey, not because I’m a Flames fan … but to honor Johnny Gaudreau, who tragically passed away,” Zayn said in an interview with Jackie Redmond. “And I don’t know, it makes you think about the time you have here and what you do with it.”

The Gaudreau brothers were tragically killed Aug. 29 when they were struck by a car while riding bicycles near their home in Salem County, New Jersey. A funeral for the Gaudreau brothers was held Monday in Media, Pennsylvania.

Gaudreau played the first nine seasons of his NHL career with the Flames before he signed with the Columbus Blue Jackets in 2022.
