EDMONTON, AB - The Edmonton Oilers held their final full practice on Tuesday before the start of their 2022-23 NHL season on Wednesday when the Vancouver Canucks visit Rogers Place.
The Oilers solidified their opening day roster this morning of 21 players (12 forwards, seven defencemen and two goalies) that's two below the league maximum of 23 players -- a decision made by the Oilers due to their proximity to the salary cap upper limit of $82.5 million.
Head Coach Jay Woodcroft expects there to be some fluidity in the Oilers roster as the season progresses, and even potentially before the regular season starts, that will be a byproduct of different factors that include injuries and salary cap management as teams around the League spend as close as they can to the salary cap ceiling.
"I would expect to see some roster maneuvering here over the next while," Woodcroft said. "I think that's just part and parcel. I don't think we're the only team in this kind of situation right now, so we're going to be light on our feet. We're going to be ready to respond based on whatever the circumstances are with the people we have available to us, but I would expect some roster maneuvering over the next little while."
