EDMONTON, AB -The name of the game is development at Oilers Development Camp, where education is the mandate.
Some Oilers prospects, including 10th-overall selection Evan Bouchard, know what they want to develop and gain from this week.
"A good learning experience," the London Knights defender said. "Know what the coaches think about you, know about the skating we just did and what they think I need to improve on."
On Monday, the prospects did some light skating drills that were recorded by management. Once they break down the footage, the players hope to gain an idea of what aspects, specifically, they need to improve.
Resources such as Oilers Skills Development Coach Paul Coffey, who met the defence prospects, and Oilers Skating Coach David Pelletier, who skated with them, will help with that.
Bouchard was asked how he will hone in on it.
"Not always going 100 percent but focusing on the little things," he said. "The fundamentals first."
That could include edge work, form, stride mechanics or some combination of them all, but Bouchard maintains his skating is adequate.
"I think it (skating) is still NHL ready," the 87-point player said. "It's for sure something that needs improvement like I mentioned, but I think there's a lot of other things in my game that makes up for it... my instincts, vision on the ice. Confidence plays a big part of it as well."
Bouchard owns a powerful slap shot and precise first pass. He was asked which he prides more.
"You can't really get a good shot off if your passes aren't good getting out of the zone, so I think passing is a little more important."
