GAME STORY: Oilers 4, Maple Leafs 3 (OT)

EDMONTON, AB - Connor McDavid scored another goal-of-the-year candidate and followed it up with the OT winner as the Oilers beat the Maple Leafs 4-3 in sudden death.

FIRST BLOOD

Dominik Kahun scored his first with the Oilers to open the scoring at 11:28 of the first period. The German connection finally converted as Leon Draisaitl found his fellow countryman with a backhand pass, and though Kahun fanned on his first shot, the deception drew Leafs goalie Frederik Andersen towards the ice and the winger roofed his second attempt for his 26th goal in the NHL.

PLAY OF THE GAME

McDavid did it again. There's just something about his hometown team that brings out the absolute best in Captain Connor. Just over a year after he posterized Leafs defenceman Morgan Rielly and scored the top goal of the 2019-20 season, McDavid submitted his nomination for the best play of the current campaign with a mind-blowing power-play marker. He received his usual drop-pass just in front of Mikko Koskinen, exploded down the ice, maneuvered around all four Leafs players and undressed Andersen to finish his sixth of the season.

SAVE OF THE GAME

Koskinen made a point-blank denial on Mitch Marner early in the middle frame and followed that up with an even better diving glove save on the Leafs leading scorer in the third to help the Oilers kill a penalty against the lethal Toronto PP unit. Wayne Simmonds made a cross-ice pass to Marner for the quick shot, but Koskinen was quicker as he went horizontal and stretched his six-foot-seven frame across for the trapper stop.

TURNING POINT

The dynamic duo delivered in overtime just as they've done countless times in the past as Draisaitl set up McDavid streaking to the net for the winning goal just 42 seconds into the extra frame. The captain is now one OT winner behind the guy who set him up for the most in franchise history.

TOP PERFORMER

McDavid's two goals and one assist gave him his fourth consecutive multi-point game for the fifth time in his career. His personal best is eight multi-point games in a row, achieved over a two-week stretch in March 2019. McDavid is up to seven goals and 10 assists in 10 games to lead the NHL in points.

FACT CHECK

Per Elias Sports Bureau, McDavid has scored 17 points through the first 10 games this season, matching his total through the first 10 games in each of the prior two seasons. Before him, the last Oilers player with 17 or more points through the team's first 10 games was Mark Messier in 1989-90.

NEXT UP

From one Ontario opponent to another, the Ottawa Senators are next up at Rogers Place as the Oilers play the second half of their back-to-back on Sunday at 7pm MT before wrapping up the two-game series and their four-game homestand on Tuesday at 8pm MT.

"Oh man, yeah... that's just what he does," Tyson Barrie said of McDavid's amazing first goal on which he assisted. "He's been doing it since he came into the league. It's incredible. That's the second time this year already, if not more, where everyone is just kind of in awe of something he does. It's pretty impressive. I don't know how you stop that."
"Hopefully this is a turning point for us and we can go on a bit of a tear," Barrie said of the exciting victory as the Oilers improved to 4-6-0 on the season and will face Ottawa in their next two.
"It's very nice, for sure," Kahun said of his first Oilers goal. "It's a relief a little bit, because we've started to play really good in the O-zone and had so many chances and I finally got rewarded."
"That was a good hockey game... The only thing that hockey game was missing was fans," Head Coach Dave Tippett said. "That would have made it a great game. The star players were in full force, both teams competed hard, we got a couple good saves from Koski, and we were able to capitalize in overtime."
