Kraken Day

Less than six months after their very first NHL game, the Seattle Kraken turned their name into a holiday.

On Wednesday, the Mayor of Seattle Bruce Harrell declared March 2 Kraken Day.
"I'm proud to proclaim today, March 2, 2022, Kraken Day in honor of the 32nd NHL franchise -- the team, players and most of all fans who've turned Seattle into a hockey town overnight," Harrell

.

In Seattle-style, the Kraken made its holiday namesake a party.
Throughout the first inaugural Kraken Day, fans took part in celebrations all around town. The Kraken Community Iceplex gave skaters a 32% discount on ice time, sticks and pucks, as did the Kraken team store on gear inside Climate Pledge arena.
Seattle's sports radio KJR 950 gave away prizes -- including autographed Kraken jerseys, gear and round-trip airlines tickets -- every hour to the 32nd caller.
The Seattle Aquarium gave the first 32 kids who came to the aquarium a Kraken Crew Kit. The aquarium also returned the Kraken to its natural habitat, hanging a team banner in one of the tanks.

"Kraken fans have turned Seattle into a hockey town," Harrell said. "Over 1 million people have visited the Kraken Community Iceplex in the past year… On Oct. 23, 2021, at the Kraken's first game at Climate Pledge Arena, the No. 32 was retired in honor of the fans, who's unwavering passion for this team ran as deep as Puget Sound."
Come game time, each Kraken fan received a "32" banner. But the number means more than its franchise tag.
"On March 1, 2018, 32,000 fans in Seattle placed season ticket deposits in a single, 24-hour period, putting the hockey world on notice that Seattle is a hockey town and giving life to the NHL's 32nd franchise," Harrell said.
If these are the perks for the first-ever Kraken Day, imagine what's to come on the 32nd one.
