PRE-GAME REPORT

VANCOUVER, BC - The Oilers are set for a Pacific Division clash along the Pacific Rim against the Vancouver Canucks on Wednesday, a team they haven't fared well against this season.
Vancouver is victorious versus Edmonton in the 2018-19 campaign, winning the prior two meetings by 4-2 scores.
There's no time to dwell on that, however, as the pressure to win on Wednesday is obvious with both squads vying for the final Western Conference wild card spot. Edmonton, Vancouver and the Anaheim Ducks are all tied with 47 points, while St. Louis is keeping up with 45.
"Every game is a sudden death elimination game," said Oilers Head Coach Ken Hitchcock. "We're going to be like this for a couple months. It's just the way it is. You're going to play well in some games and not win or you're going to have some really emotional wins or losses."
Rather than uncover intel on their opposition, Hitchcock continues to preach internal improvement to his club, something he noted in his morning availability.
"The big thing for us," Hitchcock said, "is how organized is our own game? I think right now, we're spending very little time on the opposition and 90 percent of the time on us and trying to get us better."
The Oilers bench boss, owning a record of 13-11-2 since joining the franchise on Nov. 20, 2018, is getting prepared for the critical battles the Oilers will have to endure for the rest of the season if they hope to make the postseason.
"At the end of the day, these emotional games and these games where both teams seem to be pouring everything into it like it's Game 7s, you're going to have to deal with that for the balance of the season."
DIVISION RIVALS
The Canucks will be without their leading scorer Elias Pettersson on Wednesday. The rookie sensation has 22 goals and 42 points this season, three coming against the Oilers. Pettersson is close to returning from his sprained MCL but confirmed he would be out.
Vancouver will rely on fellow point producers Bo Horvat (17G, 20A) and Brock Boeser (15G, 14A) as a result of Pettersson's absence.
Hitchcock alluded to Vancouver's forward corps but highlighted the team's defence.
"They got good forwards and they're really strong at the centre ice position," Hitchcock said, "but our problem is that we haven't been able to get to the defence. Their defence is underrated, it's experienced, they play the game the right way and they're able to escape trouble."
Breaking down the defensive efforts of the 'Nucks will be imperative should the Oilers fly out of British Columbia with two points in the bag.
"We've got to dig in a little deeper if we expect to beat them... To me, that group back there has been the story of the first two games."
Edmonton is 5-4-1 in their last 10 games against Vancouver.
HELLO, YAMAMOTO
Coach Hitchcock confirmed Kailer Yamamoto will play alongside Milan Lucic and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins on the second line in Wednesday's affair. The Spokane, WA, product was activated earlier in the day while defenceman Alexander Petrovic was placed on Injured Reserve.
"I like his moxie," Hitchcock said of Yamamoto, who has one goal and one assist in 13 games with the big club this season.
"He's got moxie on the ice, he's got speed and he's got skill."
Yamamoto's last taste of action was on Dec. 29, 2018, against the San Jose Sharks. The forward played 11:45 before sustaining an upper-body injury, which has kept him in the press box.
"It slows the game down a little bit," Yamamoto said of observing the game from up top. "You can see plays generate, you can watch Connor and take notes from his game and (Leon) Draisaitl's.
"You take a lot of pointers from sitting in the press box."
Hitchcock alluded to both youngsters Yamamoto and Jesse Puljujarvi playing on the right wing with the Oilers as they continue trying to find their game in the NHL.
"I know we got two younger guys playing wing right now, two guys with not a lot of experience, but I'd like to see how both guys look before we take the conservative approach," he said.

CAVE DRAWING IN
In an effort to augment the depth of the club's forward group, Oilers President of Hockey Operations and General Manager Peter Chiarelli claimed Colby Cave from the Boston Bruins on Tuesday.
Cave is expected to draw into the lineup at the centre position with Jujhar Khaira and Puljujarvi on the team's third line.
Cave hails from Saskatchewan and grew up idolizing the Oilers. The 24-year-old admitted his excitement following the morning skate.
"I'm coming to the Edmonton Oilers," Cave said. "It's a team a grew up watching my whole life. I want to do whatever I can to help the team win."
Cave, who will don No. 12, has 23 career NHL games to his name, scoring one goal and five points over that span.
"I take pride in winning faceoffs and being strong defensively," he said. "This year, I've been trying to work on my offensive game a little more."
Hitchcock wants Cave to feel part of the team from the get-go, hence his inclusion in the lineup.
"He's a guy that's going to help us depth-wise," he said, "and he's a guy that can play in that bottom-six role. We want to get him started tonight to see how he looks… We don't know what to expect until he's got a couple games under his belt."
Hitchcock elaborated on the waiver acquisition, saying it helps the Oilers in a few ways.
"We've had a whole (at the centre position) and we need it filled," said Hitchcock. "We've tried everybody we can in there… And it puts JJ (Khaira) to the left side where he's much more familiar and he's a better player for us there.
"So, I think it impacts us positively in two places."
Khaira, who played with Cave in the Subway Series a few years ago, wants to hit the ground running with the new Oilers forward.
"Jesse and I are both excited," he said. "He's a great player and we want to start on the right foot and be a presence early tonight… He's quick, he's a smart player and he's got a great shot."
LINEUP NOTES
The Oilers held an optional skate on Wednesday but Hitchcock did confirm a few lineup notes.
Nugent-Hopkins will centre Lucic and Yamamoto, while Cave plays middleman with Khaira and Puljujarvi up front.
Hitchcock also said the defence formations will be the same as last game.
Lineups will be made apparent at warmups but here is what they could potentially look like:

Head-to-Head:
Tonight's game is the third of four meetings between the Oilers and Canucks this season. Vancouver has defeated Edmonton in the previous two games in 2018-19, doubling up on the Oil 4-2 both occasions.
Brock Boeser has two goals and four points in the two games, while rookie Elias Petterson has three points.
The clubs will conclude their season series on Thursday, March 7 in Edmonton.
Oilers team scope:
The Oilers dispatched the Buffalo Sabres 7-2 on Monday, with forwards Zack Kassian and Lucic pitching in with two goals apiece. Tobias Rieder, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Connor McDavid also registered multi-point efforts in the game.
Lucic, who has three goals in his past four tilts, was vocal about the support Oilers Head Coach Ken Hitchcock has provided him.
"He's always pumped me up and said a lot of positive things to me," he said. "Even in our one-on-one meetings, it's been critical at times but it's been good criticism. It's been positive criticism. That's something that I think I've always thrived on."
The Oilers are 4-6-0 in their last 10 and 3-2-0 in the past five, two points out of the final Western Conference wild card position. The club is tied with the Canucks and Anaheim Ducks with 47 points, two behind the Minnesota Wild's 49.
Canucks team scope:
The Canucks are hoping rookie sensation Pettersson, sidelined the past three matches with a sprained knee, will be able to go on Wednesday.
"I'm not ruling anything out right now,"
said
Canucks Head Coach Travis Green on Tuesday.
Pettersson, who has 22 goals and 42 points in 38 games this season, has played a major part in helping the Canucks contend for a playoff spot in '18-19. The 2017 5th-overall selection leads the team in points, while Bo Horvat (37) and Brock Boeser (29) trail him.
Vancouver is 2-2-1 in their past five outings and are 10-9-2 at Rogers Arena.
