PRE-GAME REPORT
EDMONTON, AB- The Oilers look to complete a perfect homestand when they host the red-hot Vegas Golden Knights at Rogers Place. Tonight marks the second meeting between the two clubs, as Vegas defeated Edmonton by a score of 6-3 on Nov. 18.
The Golden Knights, who took the league by storm last season, are coming off an inaugural year to remember. Last season's Cinderella team defied all odds by earning a berth in the Stanley Cup Finals, defeating the L.A. Kings, San Jose Sharks and Winnipeg Jets in the post-season but falling to the Washington Capitals in their playoff finale.
This season saw the Golden Knights struggle out of the gate, going 7-10-1 in their first 18 games. Since then, Vegas has been able to string together seven wins in their last nine (7-2-0), scoring 4.11 goals per game during that stretch. The team currently has a season-high five-game winning streak.
"They're getting back to the team they were last season," said Oilers defenceman Oscar Klefbom. "They play with a lot of speed and they've been playing pretty good lately, so we have to be on our toes. We're feeling pretty good about ourselves, too. It's going to be a tight and tough game tonight."
Vegas forward Max Pacioretty has been an offensive catalyst in his last nine, accumulating 13 points (8G, 5A). The 6-foot-2, 206-pound winger had two points in the first 14 games with his new club. His current seven-game point streak is the third longest in the NHL behind Cam Atkinson (nine games) and Nikita Kucherov (eight games).
"We've had our puck luck recently and he's definitely a guy who had his chances for the first 10 or 15 games and it just didn't go in," said Golden Knights Head Coach Gerard Gallant. "Now, everything he's shooting is going into the back of the net. His puck luck comes from working hard."
While their goal-scoring numbers have gone up recently, the team has been getting dependable goaltending from their number one netminder. Marc-Andre Fleury has won six straight for the Black & Gold, while recording three shutouts for the Knights in eight games since Nov. 14. The 2003 first-overall pick leads the NHL with five shutouts to his name this season.
MAKE IT THREE STRAIGHT FOR KOSKINEN
While 'Flower' has been stellar for Vegas as of late, the Oilers will look to a hot goaltender of their own as Mikko Koskinen will start between the pipes for the third consecutive game. Koskinen has a perfect 4-0-0 record at Rogers Place, carrying a 1.08 GAA and .965 SV% on home ice. He also has two shutouts this season, registering one in Tuesday's outing against the Dallas Stars - a 1-0 overtime victory which saw him turn aside 28 shots.
With two goaltenders playing at the top of their games, Oilers forward Drake Caggiula acknowledges that goals may be hard to come by for both teams.
"It's a pretty good bet," said Caggiula following morning skate. "Both goalies have been playing some really good hockey this year. We need to get some traffic in front of Marc-Andre Fleury tonight and we have to make it really hard for him to see the puck and do those little things around the net. If he sees the puck, he's going to make the save.
"But we also have a lot of confidence in Koskinen right now. He's been playing big for us."
Tonight will mark Koskinen's fifth start since Ken Hitchcock was appointed as the Oilers Head Coach on November 20th. The netminder has a 3-0-1 record under Hitchcock.
PULJUJARVI PROVIDING CONFIDENCE
Jesse Puljujarvi picked up his second goal of the season on Thursday against the Kings - his third game since being recalled from Bakersfield. At the time of his call-up one week ago, Ken Hitchcock mentioned he wanted responsibility for the young forward's development and has been pleased with the Finnish product.
"He does things that coaches love," said Hitchcock. "He has an element, regardless if he scores or doesn't score, that really helps you win hockey games. I don't want to discourage that element because it's really helping us right now."
Tonight will make the third straight game that the Finnish forward will be playing alongside Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Caggiula. The trio combined for four points in Thursday's victory against the Kings.
"Of course, it's a good thing when you score. We played pretty good and hope we can start good today again," said Puljujarvi. "I like playing with those guys, they work hard and make good passes. I have to stay to the net and help those guys have more room in the corners. If I have a chance to shoot, I will shoot and make sure I have a good second effort tonight."
Added Caggiula of Puljujarvi: "Anytime you score a goal, it definitely helps with your confidence. Jesse went down to the minors and played some pretty good hockey down there. I'm sure that's building his confidence. As a line, that definitely helps us out.
"He's a great player and he's got a lot of skill. If he can play with a clear mind and a lot of confidence, he's going to be a heck of a player in this League."
KLEFBOM GETTING REWARDED
When describing Oscar Klefbom's game, his teammates use one word: workhorse.
The Swedish rearguard's 25:47 of ice time per game is the fourth-highest total in the League behind Drew Doughty, Seth Jones and Kris Letang. With game-winning goals in back-to-back matches, the defenceman feels he has been rewarded offensively at just the right time.
"I think I have been doing the same thing and right now, I've been lucky a couple of times," said Klefbom. "Obviously, it's nice to get the first one and it's been good timing with the first couple here. I'm very happy about that.
"But at the same time, that's in the past right now, I just want to focus on the game tonight and focus on my game tonight."
Klefbom is currently averaging the highest point-per-game average of his career with 13 points (2G, 11A) through 25 games played (0.52 PPG). He currently has five points (2G, 3A) during a three-game point streak.
LINEUP NOTES
Hitchcock has made one lineup adjustment from Thursday's game, slotting Ty Rattie back into the lineup in place of Patrick Russell. Russell was reassigned to Bakersfield on Friday.
"I just have to make an impact on the game somehow, some way," said Rattie following morning skate. "You have to prove to the coach that you can help the team win, night in and night out. That's my mindset heading into tonight, whether it's contributing offensively or defensively."
Lines at morning skate:

Caggiula - Nugent-Hopkins - Puljujarvi
Lucic - Brodziak - Kassian

PREVIEW
OILERS (12-11-2) vs. GOLDEN KNIGHTS (14-12-1)
TV: 8:00 p.m. MST; Televised on CBC & Sportsnet
Head-to-Head:
Tonight's game is the second of four meetings between the Oilers and Golden Knights in the 2018-19 campaign. In their first clash, Reilly Smith and Jonathan Marchessault produced three points apiece to help Vegas double up on the Oilers by a score of 6-3. The two clubs will play out the season series in Vegas, meeting on March 17, and April 1.
Oilers team scope:
In their last outing, the Oilers edged the Los Angeles Kings 3-2 thanks to Oscar Klefbom's third-period power-play marker. It was the second time in two games Klefbom provided game-winning heroics, as the Swede scored the OT finisher in Edmonton's 1-0 win over the Dallas Stars on Tuesday.
The Oilers are riding a two-game winning streak and are 3-1-1 since Oilers Head Coach Ken Hitchcock began his tenure. The bench boss ran a designate practice on Friday, which Hitchcock noted to be different than an optional.
"We designate the people based on fitness level that need rest or work," said the Oilers coach, who had 12 skaters and two goaltenders on the ice.
The Oilers exited the month of November with a 6-7-1 record and currently rank fifth in the Pacific Division with 26 points, chasing the visiting Golden Knights and San Jose Sharks by three points for the third spot.
Golden Knights team scope:
The Golden Knights are the second-hottest team in the NHL right now, putting together five consecutive wins which began in Arizona on Nov. 21. The squad's latest victory was a 4-3 slight over the Vancouver Canucks.
The Golden Knights have gone 7-2-0 since their Nov. 11, 4-1 loss to the Boston Bruins, at that point owning a record of 7-10-1. Each of the club's wins has been over Western Conference opponents since that time and Vegas has owned the Pacific this year, going 7-1-1 versus fellow divisional foes.
Vegas sits fourth in the Division with 29 points.
By the Numbers:
Oilers Captain Connor McDavid has an NHL-high 71 multi-point games since the 2016-17 season. ... The Oilers Captain has drawn 100 minor penalties since '16-17, one behind Matthew Tkachuk for the NHL lead.
