PRE-GAME REPORT

EDMONTON, AB - After coming up just short against the Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday, scoring twice in the final 100 seconds of the match to get within one goal but ultimately losing 3-2, the Oilers will look to rebound against the New York Rangers on Monday.
The Orange & Blue have played well of late, going 4-1-0 in their last five and 6-2-2 in their last 10 but continue to stay out of the playoff picture, sitting seven points back of the Minnesota Wild for the second Western Conference wild card spot.
Every game is a playoff game for the remainder of the regular season and the Oilers have very little margin for error if they hope to be included in the postseason. Despite the club's rash of success recently, the only thing the squad can control is their effort each night.
"We're not paying attention to the teams that are in the same quagmire as us but you're always trying to look up and trying not to get discouraged," said Oilers Head Coach Ken Hitchcock. "It's an emotional time for everybody because every game you watch matters, every team above you in the standings matter.
"You're hoping for losses, injuries, sickness, whatever can come to those teams."
PUSH FOR PLOFFS
Away from the rink, Matt Benning tries not to watch too much hockey on his free time, electing to shut off in search of some balance.
That hasn't been the case of late, as the Oilers rearguard can't help but stay up-to-date on the outcomes each new night in the National Hockey League, with the Oilers playing well and picking up points but making minor traction while the teams ahead of them keep winning.
"I don't really like to watch games, to be honest," Benning, who has two goals and 11 points on the year, said. "But you look at the highlights, the standings and the scores… we're definitely looking at it."
The stretch drive is firmly upon the team and the energy levels have been heightened, despite the wear-and-tear of a long, arduous season making its impact on the players.
"This is my third year and I think the last 20 games, you get tired and your body gets fatigued," Benning added. "It's a mind over matter thing for the last little bit here.
"For us in here, we're playing more of a playoff game compared to the beginning of the year, so that's a good sign for us."
LINEUP NOTES
Oilers forward Milan Lucic did not skate with the team Monday morning but did get on the ice for an individual session.
"Looch skated today for 45 minutes and he'll join us for practice tomorrow," said Hitchcock. "If everything goes well, he'll join the pre-game skate for the next game."
Mikko Koskinen manned the starter's crease on Monday after succumbing to illness prior to Saturday's match against Toronto. Anthony Stolarz stopped 37 of 40 shots against in the game, making quite the impression on the Oilers bench boss.
"I would say we were surprised by how efficient Stolarz was with not being able to play very much," said Hitchcock. "But Koskinen's been on the mark for a little while right now and we want to keep that going."
Lines at morning skate appeared to be:
Draisaitl - McDavid - Kassian
Khaira - Nugent-Hopkins - Gagner
Rieder - Cave - Chiasson
Malone - Brodziak - Currie
Klefbom - Larsson
Nurse - Russell
Sekera - Benning
Koskinen
