PRE-GAME REPORT
CHICAGO, IL - The Edmonton Oilers may have physically been home for one game, but mentally, they're still on the same road trip.
After visiting the Big Apple for three games against the Devils, Islanders and Rangers, the Oilers returned home for a one-off dramatic late victory over the Panthers before darting back out east to Chicago to open back-to-back games beginning tonight at the United Center against the Blackhawks.
"You know what, I see this as a continuation of the road trip almost," Head Coach Jay Woodcroft said. "Edmonton was a road game for us because we were out, then came back for one, and then obviously now we're back into Chicago and Minnesota tomorrow night."
Between travel, recent results and a tough opponent in the Panthers, Monday's result was an important one as Edmonton now tries to build on its second comeback effort in a row and secure its third straight victory on Wednesday against the Blackhawks -- a team that's fast and skilled but has fallen on hard times with seven straight losses.
"I thought it was important for us to get the result last game," Woodcroft added. "I thought we did some good things and we're going to have to bring those forward against a very dangerous Chicago Blackhawks team."
"We know what we're up against tonight. Their team works. They're well-coached, they've had a little bit of a tough run recently, but they have the skill that can make you pay if you play a sloppy game."
The Oilers last meeting with the Blackhawks met that 'sloppy' criterion with a combined 11 goals and 17 powerplays between the two sides, but a late Leon Draisaitl goal with 38 seconds left in regulation secured the Blue & Orange the two points and bail the Oilers out in a crazy 6-5 win.
The Doc Clocks A Half-Century
Darnell Nurse wasn't aware he had a big career milestone coming up until his wife Mikayla brought it to his attention.
"Within a season, it becomes like you have game day, practice day and off day, and you're not really counting the games as they come," the Oilers defenceman said following morning skate in Chicago ahead of his 500th NHL regular season appearance.
"You kind of just worry about the next opponent and whatnot. Even for 500, I didn't really know it was coming and my wife said the other day 'I think it's your 500th game' and I was like 'oh really?' so we looked it up and figured out it was today. It's a very cool milestone. I'm thankful and grateful to have had the opportunity to play in this league and play 500 of them. Hopefully there's many more."
After getting selected seventh overall at the 2013 NHL Draft, the Hamilton native made his Oilers debut on Oct. 14, 2014 in Los Angeles against the Kings and looked backed fondly on game one ahead of game 500 just over eight years later.
"It was a pretty special day to be able to live a dream like that," Nurse said. "I think I was dash-one in the first shift, but it's still fun to look back on it. It was a good game, a great experience. I think they were defending Stanley Cup champs, so it was it was really eye-opening to know how hard this league is."
Since the start of the 2020-21 season, the 27-year-old leads the Oilers in ice time by a wide margin, averaging 25:05 per game, nearly three minutes more than Leon Draisaitl (22:18) and Connor McDavid (22:12). He credits his growing tenure in the League for his ability to handle that significant leadership role on the back end.
"With time comes maturity and confidence," said Nurse, who also has three goals and nine assists in 22 games this season.
"I don't think those are two things you can really just automatically come into the league and have. There are things you have to earn and build within yourself. In game 500, I have a lot more of both of those. The confidence to come in and play and just be myself, not really caring about other things, I wish I had that when I first got in. But at game 500, I've definitely changed a lot."
Benson Back In The Fold
After going down with a knee injury at the tail end of Oilers Training Camp back in October, forward Tyler Benson is ready to potentially make his season debut tonight in Chicago.
The Edmonton, AB product last played an NHL game on March 7, 2022 in the Battle of Alberta before finishing the 2021-22 campaign down in Bakersfield. After a long wait to get back to this level and a near two-month recovery, the 24-year-old looks poised to play a contributing role tonight in Chicago with four of Edmonton's top nine forwards out with injury.
"Very excited. It feels like it's been a long time since my last game here at this level, so I'm excited to play," Benson said. "It was a long process to get back healthy and up to speed and back in shape again, but I feel like I've prepared well over these past eight weeks to get ready for it again. I feel like I'm ready to go tonight."
Benson was limited in his movement and activity for the first stage of his recovery before being able to get back in the gym to begin working his knee's health back up so he could get back to the NHL with the Oilers. The left-shot left-winger completed a three-game conditioning stint in Bakersfield before being cleared to come off Injured Reserve this past Sunday.
"The first few weeks are slow. I mean, I wasn't allowed to do much," he said. "I was in a little bit of pain, so it took a little bit to get back in, but once I was able to get back into the gym, we were training and getting the knee back to health; then once I was able to kind of go full in the gym, we were training pretty hard to make sure that my cardio, my fitness levels, were up to speed and back into game shape."
It's an all-too-common occurrence for Benson, who's battled injuries over his career dating back to his time in the WHL with the Vancouver Giants. Where there's struggle comes strength, however, as Benson's learned how to best navigate injury stints from experience.
"I think it has yeah, for sure. It helps just mentally, just knowing you've been through it and knowing things are going to get better," he said. "You know how to prepare and you just have to be patient with it too. You can't rush things. You don't want to delay things even more than they should be, so I think being through it before and having gone through these kinds of things, it's helped me through this process and I think I'm ready to go."
LINEUP NOTES
Benson's return to the Oilers lineup allows us the opportunity to witness the unlikely phenomenon of seeing three players from the same Bantam U15 hockey team in the same NHL dressing room.
Benson, goaltender Stuart Skinner and James Hamblin, who's fresh off making his NHL debut on Monday, all suited up for the South Side Athletic Club U15 AAA Lions back in 2012-13 as teammates. Benson recorded an incredible 57 goals and 146 points in 33 games that season, while Skinner registered a 1.75 GAA and .929 save percentage.
All three players went on to have successful stays in the WHL, but only Benson and Skinner were drafted by the Oilers. Hamblin has worked his way up from undrafted, to the AHL and then to the NHL and after impressing at Oilers Rookie Camp, Training Camp and during preseason.

"Yeah, pretty special. It's pretty crazy," Benson said. "To see three guys from the same minor hockey club be in the NHL is one thing, but to be on the same team and playing together, it's a pretty cool moment and we're excited and to see James make it. It's been pretty cool."
Forward Klim Kostin will be unavailable tonight against Chicago as he works through VISA and work permit issues in hopes of getting back into the lineup tomorrow in Minnesota.
"Obviously with Klim getting some work permit issues sorted out, Klim won't be an option, but we haven't decided yet where we're going to go if it's going to be eleven-and-seven or twelve-and-six," Woodcroft said.
In Benson, Woodcroft and his coaching staff have a player they're familiar with who can step in and fill the role left behind by Kostin.
"The good thing about Tyler for me is that I've coached him for four-and-a-half years, so I know exactly what he brings to the table," Woodcroft added. "He's someone that I felt had a really good training camp, and in his last preseason game he got injured and that was unfortunate for him.
"But after a lot of work in rehabbing and getting ready, he went down to the American Hockey League on a conditioning assignment and did well down there. He's certainly a good option for us should we put him in the lineup tonight."
Skinner was in the starter's net and looks set to earn his second straight start after making 25 saves in Monday's 4-3 win over Florida.

PREVIEW
OILERS at BLACKHAWKS
STREAM: 7:30 p.m. MT; televised on Sportsnet West & 360
Oilers Team Scope
The Edmonton Oilers commence back-to-back games on Wednesday against the Chicago Blackhawks after securing another dramatic comeback win on Monday night over the Florida Panthers to make it two wins in a row for the Blue & Orange.
After erasing a three-goal deficit in the third period at Madison Square Garden on Saturday to defeat the New York Rangers, the Oilers equalized through Evan Bouchard with 4.4 seconds remaining in regulation of Monday's meeting with the Panthers at Rogers Place before the Dynamic Duo of Leon Draisaitl and Connor McDavid connected 22 seconds into extra time.
"We did it in dramatic fashion in New York and we did it in dramatic fashion here today against a good Florida Panthers team, a well-coached Florida Panthers team, that gave us everything we could handle," Coach Woodcroft said.
The Oilers held the Panthers, the only team in the League this season to average over 40 shots per game this season, to only 28 shots while the defence held strong in front of Stuart Skinner with some solid minutes from Edmonton's depth contributors -- including James Hamblin playing just shy of 10 minutes in his NHL debut.
The Oilers were missing four of their top nine forwards in the last-gasp win and will continue to rely heavily upon names like Mattias Janmark, Devin Shore and Dylan Holloway to help carry the load for Edmonton up front.
"I thought that commitment to defending the heart of our D zone helped us get the win, and that is the way we're going to have to play here," Woodcroft said. "We're missing four of our top nine forwards, and I thought the players that went in to take some of those minutes gave us everything they had. They played a great game and they committed to playing the game properly defensively and allowed us to win."
Forward Kailer Yamamoto has participated in the last three practices for the Oilers and could provide a boost to the lineup if the Spokane, Wash. product is able to return on this quick two-game trip.
Blackhawks Team Scope
The Chicago Blackhawks gave up a touchdown in a 7-2 defeat to the Winnipeg Jets on Sunday to sink to their seventh straight defeat, losing by two-plus goals in six of seven of those losses.
Andreas Athanasiou had the puck in the back of the net early in the game before the call was overturned by video review for offside. Things never improved for the Windy City side from there despite some chances to get back into the game in the second and third periods as defending and mental fortiutude became the downfall for Chicago according to Head Coach Luke Richardson.
"We had lots of good chances in the O-zone," Richardson said. "We are sometimes just unaware in certain areas defending and it's just seems like you play good teams with [Mark] Scheifele and [Kyle] Connors and they're going to score. We have to obviously score more goals to win a game, but we can't give up the goals that we're giving up right now."
The Blackhawks had the day off Monday in hopes of clearing their minds before regrouping at Tuesday's practice, where Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews were reunited on the same line.
"You just gotta feel that [the wins] are coming," forward Patrick Kane said. "For the team and myself personally, it just seems like something good is gonna happen here soon. So [we're trying] to make that happen sooner rather than later."
Chicago has failed to score four or more goals in a game since their last meeting with the Oilers back on Oct. 29 that ended in a 6-5 win for Edmonton after both teams combined for 17 powerplays. Leon Draisaitl scored the game-winner with 38 seconds left in the third period. Including that loss to Edmonton, Chicago had scored five goals or more in all five of their previous games prior to this tough stretch.
