After Thursday's win in Pittsburgh, Coach Woodcroft was quick to compliment how his team jumped out of the gate, paying particular mind to how the team skated on the night.
The Oilers did skate circles around the veteran-laden Penguins on the night, outshooting their opponents by a 44-24 margin, including a 29-12 advantage through 40 minutes.
"I think it started with the skating for sure. Us skating the way we did allowed us to play a connected brand of hockey," Woodcroft said. "I thought we were good on our breakouts. I thought for us, when we are playing connected, usually you see one area of the game bleed into the next area. Our breakouts set up our play in the neutral zone, which allowed us to get on top of the other team in the offensive zone, and that's a credit to our players because they were skating well. We were working very hard and we saw good results."
"I thought we played well," Ryan agreed. "We obviously came out, had a lot of jump, had some offence come out, and got the result we wanted."
Following the win, the Oilers got back to working on their game as they try to build towards their pre-All-Star Game form that saw the team go 7-0-1 in the eight games before the break. The only team to beat them over that stretch was their Saturday opponent the Columbus Blue Jackets.
"I think that's part of our process is to not get too high off the wins, or too low when you don't win. I think we're consistent with how we look at the game, what our products, processes and communicating the next day with our playing group," Woodcroft said. "I thought today was a good day. We had a good meeting. We got our legs moving out on the ice today and used it as almost a pre-game skate for tomorrow, and we know that this team that we're going to play is going to play us tough as they have historically and they're going to give us everything they can tomorrow, so we better be ready."
