PRE-GAME REPORT

COLUMBUS, OH - Fresh off a pair of victories over the Pennsylvanian teams, the Oilers aim to push their win streak to three against the Columbus Blue Jackets.
The Saturday morning matchup will pit the Western Conference's third-ranked Oilers against the league's worst Blue Jackets. Edmonton came out and played one of their best games of the season the game prior, blowing out the Penguins by a 7-2 margin. Getting up to play a game against a Sidney Crosby lead squad is an easy proposition, but what about the NHL's cellar dwellers?
"I've said it all a year in my interviews, it doesn't matter who we're playing. We're focused on our game, especially this time of year you're trying to build," Derek Ryan said about taking on the Blue Jackets. "Like I said, it doesn't matter who we're playing. We're trying to get to our game every day and consistency of what matters. So, it doesn't matter who we're playing. We're trying to play our game."
Despite their opponents record, the Oilers know they will have to play their style of game and come out with same effort on Saturday that they did against Pittsburgh if they wish to come away with the two points.
"I think they have a great work ethic. They have a bunch of people on their team that take pride in the work rate they bring to the arena," Head coach Jay Woodcroft said about Columbus. "Tomorrow, as much as it's going to come down to X's and O's and strategy and team tactics, that type of thing, it's going to start with our competition level to make sure that we're ready to play in a tough building versus a team that prides itself on its work ethic and competition level."
The Blue Jackets already took a point from the Oilers back on Jan. 25, coming from behind for a 3-2 overtime victory at Rogers Place. To compound issues for Edmonton, they are playing their fourth matinee game in their last eight contests, a department where the team has traditionally struggled. The Oilers are 4-5-1 in games this season that begin at 2:00 p.m. MT or earlier.
To try and combat a potential slow start, Woodcroft held a vigorous practice on Friday to get the full team skating before tomorrow's contest.
"I think our start tomorrow started today by making sure that we had a good day today," he said. "We have an understanding of who the opponent is and what they bring to the table. I also think that this is probably our sixth or seventh early start on the year (seven starts at 1:00 p.m. or earlier this season). This is nothing new for us. It's just one of the oddities of the schedule and I think our team is up to the challenge."

SKATING LEGS

After Thursday's win in Pittsburgh, Coach Woodcroft was quick to compliment how his team jumped out of the gate, paying particular mind to how the team skated on the night.
The Oilers did skate circles around the veteran-laden Penguins on the night, outshooting their opponents by a 44-24 margin, including a 29-12 advantage through 40 minutes.
"I think it started with the skating for sure. Us skating the way we did allowed us to play a connected brand of hockey," Woodcroft said. "I thought we were good on our breakouts. I thought for us, when we are playing connected, usually you see one area of the game bleed into the next area. Our breakouts set up our play in the neutral zone, which allowed us to get on top of the other team in the offensive zone, and that's a credit to our players because they were skating well. We were working very hard and we saw good results."
"I thought we played well," Ryan agreed. "We obviously came out, had a lot of jump, had some offence come out, and got the result we wanted."
Following the win, the Oilers got back to working on their game as they try to build towards their pre-All-Star Game form that saw the team go 7-0-1 in the eight games before the break. The only team to beat them over that stretch was their Saturday opponent the Columbus Blue Jackets.
"I think that's part of our process is to not get too high off the wins, or too low when you don't win. I think we're consistent with how we look at the game, what our products, processes and communicating the next day with our playing group," Woodcroft said. "I thought today was a good day. We had a good meeting. We got our legs moving out on the ice today and used it as almost a pre-game skate for tomorrow, and we know that this team that we're going to play is going to play us tough as they have historically and they're going to give us everything they can tomorrow, so we better be ready."

PREVIEW

OILERS vs. BLUE JACKETS
STREAM: 10:30 a.m. MT; televised on Sportsnet West
Oilers Team Scope
The Oilers are fresh off the heels of a 7-2 romp over the Pittsburgh Penguins on Thursday night.
Connor McDavid scored his 45th and 46th goals of the season -- setting a new career high in the process -- and added two assists in the victory. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins notched his 600th career National Hockey League point on his second period wrister that beat Pens starter Tristan Jarry low blocker.
Stuart Skinner picked up his 14th victory of the season, turning away 22 of 24 Penguins opportunities for his second straight win.
The Oilers supplementary scoring came up big on the evening -- Devin Shore scored his first of the season, Kailer Yamamoto notched his fifth of the year, and Warren Foegele buried his 10th by Jarry in a four goal second period by the Oilers.
Edmonton last faced the Blue Jackets exactly one month ago in a 3-2 overtime defeat at Rogers Place. The Oilers carried a 2-1 lead into the third period of the Jan. 25 contest, but a late goal by Kirill Marchenko sent the game to extra time.
Blue Jackets top prospect Kent Johnson notched his ninth of the year in the 3-on-3 session to snap the Oilers six-game winning streak at the time.

Condensed Game: Blue Jackets @ Oilers

Blue Jackets Team Scope
Columbus enters Saturday morning's contest with the NHL's worst record at 18-35-5 on the season.
The Blue Jackets are coming off a 2-0 defeat to the Minnesota Wild on Thursday at Nationwide Arena, with Marc-Andre Fleury pitching the 30 save shutout. The Wild's goals were provided by their prolific sniper Kirill Kaprizov, who notched his 34th of the season -- while Brandon Duhaime's eighth of the year held up as the game winner.
"We had our opportunities," Erik Gudbranson said after the game. "They made it tough for us to score, for sure. To get the first two that quick, there were little mistakes that we wish didn't happen."
The Blue Jackets are lead by offseason splash Johnny Gaudreau, who signed a seven-year, 68.25 million dollar contract to depart the Calgary Flames in free agency. The 29-year-old has been far-and-away Columbus's best offensive player, with 52 points (15G, 37A) in 56 games. Patrick Laine and Boone Jenner are the next best offensive threats for Blue Jackets with 16 and 17 goals respectively on the season.
Joonas Korpisalo and Elvis Merzlikins have split time between the pipes for the squad, with varying results. Korpisalo has a solid .914 save percentage in 27 games this season, while Merzlikins has struggled with a 4.21 goals-against average and .873 save percentage in 24 appearances.
