PRE-GAME REPORT

BOSTON, MA - There's something Bruin in Beantown.
The Edmonton Oilers get their final regular-season crack at the league-leading Boston Bruins on Thursday night at TD Garden after dropping their previous meeting 3-2 at Rogers Place in late February, along with having the opportunity to prevent the Black & Yellow from becoming the fastest team in NHL history to reach 50 wins.
"Obviously it's a team that's kind of set the standard for the league so far this year, and that's a great challenge for us," defenceman Darnell Nurse said. "I think we have a lot of confidence in our group that we can come out here and play with anyone in this League, and this is a good test.
"It's one thing to feel it in here. You've got to go out there and prove it each and every night."
Slim margins decided their previous meeting in Oil Country after the Oilers played the powerhouse Bruins hard over 60 minutes, limiting chances with strong defending and getting two goals from Connor McDavid, but it was one slip-up by Edmonton that ultimately denied them the opportunity to claim two points in the eyes of head Coach Jay Woodcroft and the players.
Woodcroft is less concerned about what the Bruins put out on the ice, as an A-plus effort from the League's best should be expected to be a given.
Instead, if the Oilers are able to control what they can control and minimize turnovers to elite players like David Pastrnak, Brad Marchand, Patrice Bergeron and Charlie McDavoy, the bench boss likes their chances.
"I said last week in Edmonton when we played this team that they're not a team that beats themselves, so the freebies where you turn pucks over and it comes back down your throat, I think those areas within our control that we're going to have to be good at tonight," Woodcroft said.
"There's a reason why they've won the amount of games they've won this year, so we're going to have to manage pucks."
"It's a team that just knows how to win," Nurse added. "Any slight mistake or any room that you give them, they're able to capitalize. So, a lot of guys are feeling that. A lot of guys are playing really well, and for us, it's going to take a full 60 minutes of laser focus to get it done.

The Oilers loss to the Bruins started a stretch of seven games for the Blue & Orange against playoff-bound and playoff-contending teams that's so far returned a 3-2-0 record so far with games against Boston and Toronto still to come. "I think we have an opportunity to make it a really good stretch," Nurse said. "With that said, if we don't take care of our own business, it can also be a little bit of a painful one."
"Not a lot of teams have won in this building, so it's a tough test. But like I said, we got a lot of confidence in this group. I think we've felt there have definitely been good periods over the last week-and-a-half of hockey that we've played, but also room for improvement. I think that we're pretty honest in our assessment of our play and it's going to take our best effort."
Pushing the Bruins to the brink was a good test for Woodcroft's team that boasts a strengthened lineup after adding a couple extra bodies at the Trade Deadline who weren't members of the Oilers last time these two teams played.
"I think we've played some good hockey games since that meeting," Woodcroft said. "I thought that the game we played against Boston was a good learning game for us too because I thought we did a lot of really good things. But in the end, we made one more mistake with the puck.
"I think we're a different team now. A few trades have been made, so I'm anxious to see how we stack up against the league's top team."
Mattias Ekholm and Nick Bjugstad, both acquired before the Trade Deadline, add extra two-way elements to the Oilers lineup while forward Evander Kane, who's missed nine games with an upper-body injury, could be back in the fold tonight for the first time since Feb. 17 after taking line rushes on the top line with Connor McDavid and Zach Hyman at Wednesday's practice.
"Yeah, great challenge for us," Ekholm said on Wednesday. "I think we've played some good hockey here as of late. I can only speak for the games I've been in, but I think we've shown what we can do. We know that they're the best team in the league right now, so it's a huge challenge.
"If we can focus on ourselves trying to limit goals against, we know we're going to have a great chance. So, that's where our focus is at."

DOWWWWN THE STRETCH!

The Oilers and Bruins arrive for Wednesday's meeting at TD Garden at very different points of their respective schedules and stretch drives to the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
Edmonton finished a string of 11 games in 20 days with a win on Monday night in Buffalo that came after a home-and-away back-to-back with the Winnipeg Jets this past weekend. Following a day off on Tuesday, the Oilers got back to work with a full practice on Wednesday in preparation for visiting the Bruins tonight.
This four-game road trip marks the fifth time this season, and third time in the last four weeks, that the Oilers have traversed North America to face Eastern Conference opposition on the road.
"I hope so," Woodcroft said of his team feeling rested for an important tilt with Boston. "We're going to see it tonight. We've kind of traversed the continent three times, coming out east and then back in the last five weeks or so. These people are human beings. Our players are human beings. The coaching staff feel it, the broadcasters feel it, and certainly, the players feel it.
"I thought we found a way to dig in and come up with two points versus a really game, exciting Buffalo squad that gave us everything that we could handle."

With all the challenges of navigating the schedule, travel and everything that comes with being the furthest-north team in the NHL, the Oilers have still managed to put up by far the most regulation wins (33) in the Western Conference this season while keeping themselves in striking distance of the lead in the red-hot Pacific Division.
"It's interesting," Woodcroft pondered in his morning media availability on Thursday. "I was sitting talking with our coaching staff here this morning. We're four points out of the conference lead, which I found interesting. I also was paying attention to regulation wins and the amount that we have, so we're right there. But it's about finding ways to get points here down the stretch and trying to add layers to your game."
The Bruins arrive at TD Garden with their last game action coming on Saturday in a win over the New York Rangers. From here on out, Boston will play 20 games and five weekend back-to-backs over the final 36 days of the regular season.
"We feel good about our opportunity tonight," Woodcroft said. "I'm excited to see how our team plays."

LINEUP NOTES

Evander Kane's participation and deployment on the top line at Wednesday's practice on campus at Boston University served as a good indicator that the 31-year-old is on the precipice of returning to the Oilers lineup tonight.
"Yeah, obviously he comes and always brings a lot of energy in the lineup and brings a swagger to our group," Nurse said. "He goes out there, competes and produces for our team, but at the same time, he's always got his shoulders up and his head back and he's out there."
With the added intangibles that would come with Kane's return to the lineup, along with new acquisitions in Ekholm and Bjugstad, the Edmonton lineup is trending upwards at the right time and getting closer to its optimal construction for the stretch drive and playoffs.
"Yeah, I think it's close," Nurse added. "Obviously, we've had a few injuries and guys coming in and out. Now, knock on wood, but hopefully, we continue to have the same lineup and the same lines to kind of play together and continue to build that chemistry.
"But like I said, we're a really confident group with the guys that we have in here. We have a really tight group and a group that wants to work for each other, which is great."

Oilers Team Scope
Evander Kane practiced on the top line with Connor McDavid and Zach Hyman during Wednesday's practice at Boston University and could be an option for the Oilers when they face the Bruins on Thursday in the third game of their four-game road trip.
The 31-year-old forward has missed nine games with an upper body injury and would be a major boost to the Oilers top six if given the all clear to return to the lineup for a high-intensity duel with the League's best team in Boston. Kane has missed a combined 39 games this season and brings elements of skill, speed, size and swagger to the Oilers forward dynamic, having recorded nine goals, 10 assists, 33 PIMs and 66 hits in 24 games this year.
"We talked about it today that after the deadline, this is your team. Not much is going to change," Zach Hyman said. "So adding Evander to the fold, he's missed some time obviously this year with a couple of different injuries, but to have him back and to have time before playoffs I think is really important. There's nothing like game like conditioning and game like scenario. So, it'll be good for him to get back in the fold when he does, and it'll be fun."
A 3-2 victory over the Buffalo Sabres on Monday that saw Connor McDavid reach a new career-high of 124 points has galvanized this group heading into tonight's rematch with the Bruins, having already played the league leaders tough in a narrow 3-2 defeat back on Feb. 27 at Rogers Place.
The Oilers are 5-1-0 in their last six road games at TD Garden against the Bruins and are 11-4-5 over their last 20 games overall, earning at least a point in 16-of-20 contests.
"I thought it was a well played game in Edmonton. We had the opportunity to win that game, but in the end, we made one more mistake and they found a way to win," Head Coach Jay Woodcroft said. "Now it's our turn to repay the favor."
"We have nothing but respect for the year that the Boston Bruins are having, but in the end, tomorrow I believe comes down to us and our level of preparation and execution. If we do what we know we can do, we think we have the opportunity to win the game. That's where our focus is."

Bruins Team Scope
The Bruins are riding a 10-game win streak into Thursday's meeting with the Oilers after beating the New York Rangers 4-2 at TD Garden on Saturday night.
Boston will be on four days rest tonight when they attempt to win their 50th win of the campaign in only their 63rd game of the season. The Bruins own an NHL-best 49-8-5 record, 17 points ahead of the trailing Toronto Maple Leafs in the Atlantic Division, and look to become the fastest team to 50 wins in a season in NHL history.
"I think they're a team that does not beat themselves, so you can't help them beat yourself," Woodcroft said. "So, that comes down to managing pucks and managing different situations that occur during the game. And then, when the opportunity to strike is there, you strike."
Reprieve from the schedule for the Bruins will quickly run out on Wednesday when they begin the final 20 games of their regular season that will take place over the course of the final 36 days, including five-consecutive weekend back-to-backs.
"I feel like it's been like that the past year or two where at the end of the year, the last couple months it's every other day, a lot of back-to-backs with no time off," forward Charlie Coyle said. "That's why right now it feels kind of weird having three or four days off between games. So, just trying to do it the right way with proper rest time and practice time to get ready and make sure we're at our best for that next one.
"But it's going to be a grind, that's what we like. It helps you kind of stay in a rhythm when you're playing that much. So, it's just making sure that you're taking care of yourself and making sure you're ready to go for each given night."

RAW | Mattias Ekholm 03.08.23

By The Numbers
The Oilers lost their only meeting with the Bruins this season 3-2 on Feb 27... Since making his debut with the Oilers, Mattias Ekholm ranks fifth on the team in time on ice per game at 20:36... Brett Kulak is set to play his 400th career game... Connor McDavid has 16 points in 10 career games vs the Bruins (4G, 12A)... McDavid has 27 points during his current 11-game point streak (12G, 15A)...
This is McDavid's fourth point streak of 10+ games this season, and the longest active streak in the NHL... McDavid's 27 points are the most in an 11-game span by any player since Steven Stamkos had 27 in 2021-22 (Apr. 10 to 29)... McDavid needs just five more points to set the Salary Cap Era record for most points in a season since 2005-06 (Nikita Kucherov, 2018-19 - 128)... Leon Draisaitl needs four points to become the second player to reach 100 points in the NHL, joining McDavid... Ryan Nugent-Hopkins is on pace for a career-high 98 points this season... He looks to become the 6th player in NHL history to record his first 100-point season in his 12th career season or later...
Pastrnak is one of five players with 40+ goals, 40+ assists & a plus/minus of +25 or better through his first 62 games of a season since 1993-94... David Krejci took a season off from the NHL to play in Czechia in 2021-22, and he has returned with his best NHL season since 2018-19... Dmitri Orlov has nine points in five games since being acquired by the Bruins (3G, 6A) after recording just 19 points in 43 games with the Capitals... Linus Ullmark has 32 wins through 39 games this season (38 starts)... Only one goalie in NHL history has more wins through his first 40 games of a season... If Ullmark wins the Vezina Trophy thios season, the Bruins would have an NHL-high four Vezina Trophies since 2008-09...
