PRE-GAME REPORT

CALGARY, AB - Continue building in Cowtown.
The Edmonton Oilers carry on with their eight-game exhibition schedule as they work their way through Training Camp with a tune-up Battle of Alberta at the Scotiabank Saddledome against the Calgary Flames on Wednesday night.
As you'd expect from the home team in a situation that's similar to the one the Oilers experienced in Seattle on Monday, the Flames will ice a strong and veteran-heavy lineup tonight that includes off-season additions Jonathan Huberdeau, Nazem Kadri and Mackenzie Weegar.
Regular number-one goaltender Jacob Markstrom will start for the Flames, and of the eight defencemen that Calgary will dress tonight, five were a part of Calgary's Game 5 defeat to the Oilers in the second round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs last season.
Despite the formidable lineup from their opponent, Head Coach Jay Woodcroft is relishing the chance, along with his players, to test themselves against NHL-quality opposition as the Oilers work away at fine-tuning their game during Training Camp in advance of their season-opener on October 12 against the Vancouver Canucks.
"I look at tonight as an opportunity," he said pre-game. "It's an opportunity for some individuals to create a little separation in their battles to make the team. I think tonight is an opportunity for our team to grow its game. I really like the steps we've hit along the way here through the first few days of Training Camp. I thought we were really competitive early in some tough practices. We had a blue & white scrimmage where we saw some good things, and through the first two pre-season games I've seen some growth.
"I look at tonight that's nothing other than a great opportunity for some individuals, but also for our team, to take a step. We're going in there and we're going to give a really good effort."

Woodcroft wouldn't reveal any lineup notes for tonight other than his goaltenders, who'll be Stuart Skinner and Calvin Pickard after both combined for a 29-save shutout in Edmonton's pre-season opening win against Winnipeg on Sunday. But the roster tonight for the Oilers should feature a blend of veterans and youth, along with players who'll be showcased in different situations as competition for different roles on the team continues.
"We've said from Day 1 that there are jobs here," Woodcroft said. "But more than that, there's ice time here and there's privileged and special teams ice time available. You put people in positions to show you what they can do and we're going to try to make the best decisions possible based on the information they give us this preseason."
FOEGELE'S GROWING ROLE
Forward Warren Foegele followed an up-and-down 2021-22 NHL season with one of his most productive summers.
The 26-year-old put on about five pounds of muscle in "probably the healthiest summer I've had in a couple of seasons," he said, having the welcomed relief of being able to dedicate his time more to preparation over recovery after a few of his previous off-seasons included surgery during his time as a member of the Carolina Hurricanes.
"I think it'd be fair to say it was a little bit of a roller-coaster year," he said. "Obviously a little bit of an adjustment."
"I thought I had a good start last year, and then as a team we all kind of went through struggles. I don't know if I have an exact thing, but I think for myself I just have to stay consistent. Whether I play seven minutes or 13 minutes, it's got to be the same game. I have to do that myself and it was definitely not an easy year."
One of those players vying for increased roles mentioned by Woodcroft is Foegele, who'll contest penalty-killing responsibilities and potentially feature more on the right wing after playing more of both over three full seasons with the Hurricanes.

"I think for me, just trying to be consistent and as well here in Training Camp trying to fight my way to get on the PK. That's something I used to do throughout my whole career and something I didn't get to do last year. Just getting those minutes to be in the flow of the game is huge, so I'm trying to push hard in Training Camp to get on that."
As a bottom-six player for the Oilers, Foegele is keen to showcase his versatility by returning to the right wing and seizing a role on special teams as he did in Carolina to earn himself more minutes and give himself more opportunities to make an impact.
"Warren's a proud NHL hockey player in the prime of his career that wants to have the best season that he can," Woodcroft said. "He's a really analytical person and someone who spent a lot of time in the summer thinking of ways that he can improve."
Foegele met with Woodcroft at the start of the summer in Ontario, where they discussed last season, came up off-season plan and spoke about how the forward could see an increased workload this upcoming campaign.
So far, through the first week of Camp, Foegele has answered for a lot of those focal points according to the Oilers bench boss.
"We just sat down, we mapped out a game plan for his season, we mapped out a game plan for his training camp, and I think he's looked very good through these first six-or-seven days," Woodcroft said. "He's someone whom we're giving a shot to on the penalty kill, especially in preseason here, in order to enhance his role and get him some more minutes.
"When I sat with Warren in the summertime, I just said: 'Get ready, because you're going to get your chance here in Training Camp'. As you saw in that first pre-season game against Winnipeg, he played a lot on the penalty kill and we're going to continue to give him looks. Now, it's on him to make good on them."
LINEUP NOTES
The only other notable lineup update from Woodcroft on Wednesday morning was the unfortunate update that defenceman Vincent Desharnais will miss a few weeks after suffering an upper-body injury before Camp during captain's skates.
The 26-year-old has been around the team but has not able to take to the ice during Training Camp following the injury. After there wasn't much natural progress in his recovery, the decision was made by Desharnais to undergo surgery that will shut him down on a week-to-week basis.
"They were hoping that it would heal over time, but it didn't end up healing over time and the player made the decision to have surgery," Woodcroft said. " So it's my understanding that the surgery went really well and I don't foresee it being too many weeks, but he'll be out for a few weeks for sure."
