PRE-GAME REPORT

CALGARY, AB - Nothing like shaking out the legs out from the holiday break with the Battle of Alberta.
The Edmonton Oilers restart their schedule following a three-day layoff for the holidays with the final Battle of Alberta of the regular season on Tuesday night between the Edmonton Oilers and Calgary Flames at Scotiabank Saddledome.
"I thought we had a good pre-game skate," Head Coach Jay Woodcroft said. "The energy level in our group is good. We're ready to put our best foot forward against a good team here in Calgary."
After playing 15 games in 28 days between Nov. 26 and the start of the holiday break following a 5-2 defeat to the Vancouver Canucks on Dec. 23, the Oilers players and coaches appreciated a few days of rest and recuperation after playing nearly every other day for a month in order to recharge for the coming stretch that runs 15 games until the start of the All-Star break in late January.
The Oilers come into tonight's Battle of Alberta with the same 18-15-2 record at this point last season that places them fifth in the Pacific Division -- one point behind the Flames, who currently hold the final wild-card spot in the Western Conference with a 16-12-7 record.
Tonight's regular-season finale with the Flames comes with the opportunity for the Oilers to kickstart their next big push for the playoffs on the right foot, in addition to having the chance to win the season series against their rivals after having split the first two results.
The Flames utilized four first-period goals to win 4-3 back on Oct. 15 at Rogers Place before the Oilers exacted revenge two weeks later in Calgary with a 3-2 win.

PRE-RAW | Ryan Nugent-Hopkins 12.27.22

"Obviously a bit of a break, but there shouldn't be any excuses," centre Ryan Nugent-Hopkins said. "We want to start off hot, come out flying and not have to chase the game. Especially in a situation like this, chasing the game is tough and we've done it a few times against them and they don't make it easy on you."
"That first goal, those first couple of goals, are going to be important."
There's no time for heavy legs in Edmonton's race to the Stanley Cup Playoffs with two all-important points and the possession of a playoff spot at night's end up for grabs.
"I try and go into it with the attitude that we're going to be good here tonight, and there's no reason for us not to be good. We're rested, we have good players, and we have a good plan," Woodcroft said. "For us, as I said, we're going to take on a really good Calgary team here, a team that's playing well, and these are important two points.
"These two points that are up for grabs today are as valuable as the ones that are up to grab at the end or the middle of April, so two points are two points. They're on the table tonight, and we're looking to play our best game against a good Calgary team."
SHAKE THE LEGS OUT
From the holidays right into a heated rivalry, the Oilers have to ramp up their game in quick succession.
A meeting with the Flames following Boxing Day meant day-of-game travel from Edmonton to Calgary this morning and the pre-game skate a few hours later at Scotiabank Saddledome being the first opportunity for the Blue & Orange to get on the ice in preparation for their provincial clash.
Extra emphasis and importance land on the pre-game skate as the only opportunity to get the legs going right out of the gate.
"Obviously we haven't been on the ice in a few days, so you've got to get the blood flowing and get the feel for the puck back. Then, you've got to be ready to jump right into it when the game comes," forward Derek Ryan said.
"We're all pros here, we've been around a while and are gamers, so once the puck drops tonight, you kind of just get back into it. It's a normal hockey game and your body adapts and feels normal."

A direct approach during the morning skate extends to puck drop on tonight's game, where the simple details will take over early to get both teams in a groove.
"I think keeping it simple early, and I'm sure they'll have the same mindset, but it's about getting your legs going and getting your mind back into it as fast as you can and I think it helps," Ryan added. "Just keep it simple putting pucks in, not turning it over and not making anything easy on them over there."
Woodcroft added: "Straight-forward. Direct with the puck. Direct without the puck. Direct in the routes that we skate. Managing pucks through the neutral zone. Not trying to overcomplicate things by playing 85 feet East-West, but rather a straightforward kind of mindset. We think when we do that, we're a tough team to handle."

PREVIEW

OILERS vs. FLAMES
WATCH: 7:00 p.m. MT; televised on Sportsnet West
Oilers Team Scope
The Oilers enter Tuesday's contest looking to rebound against another Canadian rival after dropping a 5-2 decision to the Canucks prior to the Christmas break.
Edmonton had jumped out to a 2-0 first period advantage courtesy of a slick breakaway goal by Derek Ryan and Connor McDavid's 30th goal of the season. Unfortunately for the Oilers, the Canucks would slowly chip away at their advantage. J.T. Miller scored twice in the middle frame to tie the game, before a three goal third period blew the game open for the Pacific Division foe.
Bo Horvat would notch four points on the night while Collin Delia turned away 31 of 33 Oilers shots to steal a win for Vancouver.
As far as Tuesday night's opponent goes, the Oilers and Flames last got together on Oct. 29 with Edmonton picking up the 3-2 victory. Zach Hyman scored a pair of goals, including the game winner, while Connor McDavid got the other in the win.
Stuart Skinner was sensational on the night, stopping 40 of 42 Flames shots to pick up the victory. The Edmonton native has turned aside 71 of 73 Calgary opportunities this season.
Flames Team Scope
The Flames enter Tuesday's contest coming off a 3-2 overtime win against the Anaheim Ducks.
Defenceman Rasmus Andersson notched the winner 2:24 into the extra period for his fifth goal of the season, while Jacob Markstrom stopped 21 of 23 shots in the win.
The Flames held the puck for the majority of the contest, outshooting the Ducks 45-23 on the evening. Anaheim was buoyed by a pair of power-play goals by Mason McTavish and Jacob Silfverberg to push the game into extra time.
"I think 5-on-5, we controlled the game. Obviously, those kids get on the powerplay, they're pretty good," Flames Head Coach Darryl Sutter said.
It was Lukas Dotsal who held the Duck in the contest, much like he did against the Oilers roughly a week earlier. The goaltender made 42 saves on the night, repeating a stellar goaltending performance like the one that saw him turn away 46 of 49 save against the Oilers back on Dec. 17.
"When you out-chance them like that 5-on-5, you should have more than a one-goal lead. For sure," Sutter said about the high number of shots on Dotsal.
When Calgary and Edmonton last met, it was Mikael Backlund and Brett Ritchie who did the damage with both forwards notching their third goal of the season. Between the pipes, Markstrom stopped 23 of 26 shots to take the loss.
