PRE-GAME REPORT

EDMONTON, AB - A new addition to the blue line for the Edmonton Oilers will arrive in Oil Country on Wednesday in time to suit up for a high-stakes match at Rogers Place against the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Defenceman Mattias Ekholm was acquired via trade from the Nashville Predators on Tuesday afternoon with a sixth-round pick for Tyson Barrie, prospect Reid Schaefer, a 2023 first-round pick and 2024 fourth-round selection.
The 32-year-old touched down in Edmonton early this afternoon and will make his Oilers debut tonight against Toronto after flying to Alberta from Tennessee to his bring a strong, steady, veteran presence to his new team that will be valuable for the stretch drive and playoff run.
"Veteran defender with great experience, good length and takes a lot of pride in the way he plays the game," Head Coach Jay Woodcroft said. "I had an opportunity to speak to Mattias yesterday and he's someone who's very much excited to come to Edmonton to bring his family to Edmonton, raise his family in Edmonton, and someone who's excited about what we have going on in terms of our hockey club here in Edmonton.
"You put all those factors in and not only is he excited, but our team is excited to have him."
Ekholm has extensive post-season experience, competing in the postseason with Nashville for eight straight seasons that includes a trip to the Stanley Cup Final in 2016-17. The Swede's been a steady 5-on-5 contributor, recording 15 of his 18 points this season at even strength, and a rock-solid penalty-killer who will certainly get his looks for Edmonton when shorthanded in addition to being a strong puckmover.

ANALYSIS | Ekholm Trade 03.01.23

The attributes of Ekholm's game are precisely why Oilers GM & President of Hockey Operations Ken Holland and his scouting and management staffs moved to pay the price for the defender who owns a career plus-minus of +104 over 719 career regular-season games.
"One thing about Ekholm is that he's been part of a solid organization that's made deep runs into the playoffs," Head Coach Jay Woodcroft said. "He has the experience of playing in a Stanley Cup final, so all of those things are positives. But in terms of his main attributes, we want him to play towards his strengths and I think the leadership side of things comes out naturally."
"So for Mattias to come in, he's known as a very good penalty-killer similar to Desharnais. He's a long body, breaks up a lot of plays, is in the way a lot, and sometimes that's half the battle -- the visual of looking up."
But with every addition comes a subtraction that is, unfortunately, part of the game of hockey.
In the trade to Nashville, the club moved Barrie, who served as an important locker-room presence, offensive defenceman, power-play quarterback and will be missed both on and off the ice by his former teammates and coaches. Forward Jesse Puljujarvi has also moved on to Carolina in a deal for prospect Patrik Puistola early Tuesday morning in another pre-deadline shakeup in Oil Country.

PRE-RAW | Jay Woodcroft 03.01.23

"Just like we talked about with Jesse yesterday, saying goodbye to Tyson on a human level was hard because he's a great person and gave everything he had to our organization," Woodcroft said. "Sometimes that's the business side of hockey."
"Obviously, Tyson will be missed," defenceman Darnell Nurse said. "He was playing great for us on the ice. Off the ice. He was a great teammate. He's great to everyone from the staff to all of you guys as well. He was just a genuinely nice person. I think everyone really enjoyed his presence in the room, so he's going to be sorely messed. But with that said, we're looking forward to opening our arms and welcoming Mattias and he's going to be a huge part of our group, so looking forward to the next stretch with him."
The Oilers aren't the only ones who've added a new presence or two in their lineup. Toronto acquired centre Ryan O'Reilly and Noel Acciari last week and added four more pieces over the last two days in defenceman Erik Gustafsson from the Washington Capitals, Luke Schenn from Vancouver and both Jake McCabe and forward Sam Lafferty from the Chicago Blackhawks.
For Woodcroft, when it comes to scouting one of the League's leaders in the Maple Leafs beyond how they'll line up with some new faces tonight, the way their season has unfolded draws a lot of similarities to his own team.

PRE-RAW | Darnell Nurse 03.01.23

"I think they're one of the top teams in the National Hockey league," Woodcroft said. "I think what's interesting for me is the story of their season. They went through some injury adversity similar to us this year. Their injury adversity happened on the back end, and I think what they did at that time was they figured out a way to play as they've returned healthier bodies to the lineup. It's continuing to prove successful.
"I paid very much attention at that time when they were going through what they were going through. I've seen how it's played out. Even though they're introducing some new bodies, I don't see them abandoning that way of playing. It's been successful and they've added some good pieces here. We better be ready, and we will be."

FILLING THE VACANCY

With the loss of Tyson Barrie on Edmonton's power play comes an opportunity for another to take ownership of that responsibility.
"I think naturally it changes towards the personnel that you put on it," Woodcroft said. "Different people have different gifts or different strengths."
To begin, it appears that opportunity belongs to Evan Bouchard.
The 23-year-old has been an understudy to Barrie on the power play over the last two seasons, and Bouchard's ability to man the Oilers man advantage isn't in doubt by the Oilers coaches or players. Barrie was the primary option up top on Edmonton's historic power play that's operated at 31.9 percent, but when Woodcroft's sensed the need for a different look, Bouchard has been a valuable alternative who's delivered results.
"In terms of our power play, I think historically it's shown to be very good with different types of personnel," Woodcroft said. "One thing we've done over time, especially over the last year and a half since I've been up as the head coach here, is Bouchard has gotten some reps in that spot. He's been an understudy, so to speak, over the last year and a half in that spot.
"It's not just throwing somebody to the wolves that's never played with those types of players that we ice on a power play. It's been a process and like I said, he got a chance to understudy underneath a pretty good power-play quarterback. He's had his opportunities and now it's his turn, so we're excited about that."

PRE-RAW | Evan Bouchard 03.01.23

To Bouchard, Barrie was an important mentor that helped prepare him for the opportunity to take control of the quarterback position of Edmonton's top power-play unit.
"He was awesome. I think he was someone that I definitely looked up to playing similar roles, but to be able to pick his brain and learn from him, watch him play a power play and all those kinds of things, it really puts things into perspective and it's something that I'm going to cherish."
Barrie had the ability to connect on passes to the power play's incredible talent while utilizing his strong shot to contribute 32 power-play points this season.
"He put guys in good spots," Bouchard said. "I think that's what he was really good at. He took the shots whenever they were available and he made the right play a lot of the times, and I think that's why the power play worked well with him up there."
Beyond Bouchard, the Oilers have Darnell Nurse at their disposal who's been contributor to the power play in recent seasons prior to Barrie's arrival prior to the start of the shortened 2020-21 campaign.
"I think (Bouchard) would be very excited about the opportunity that's before him," Woodcroft said. "The other thing I would say is probably four years ago before Tyson was here, the guy who had a really good long look at it was Darnell Nurse. He was able to quarterback that power play when Oscar Klefbom was hurt, and did a pretty good job doing that as well.
"We feel internally, with the people that we can put on the ice on a powerplay, that it has the ability to be dangerous."

LINEUP NOTES

Forward Evander Kane will miss a sixth straight game tonight against the Maple Leafs due to an upper-body injury and remains day-to-day.
Netminder Stuart Skinner was not on the ice while Jack Campbell took extra reps at Wednesday's morning skate, leading us to believe that Skinner will be tonight's starter against Toronto -- the former team of Campbell.
"A lot of buddies over there, a lot of great memories, special organization," Campbell said. "Definitely am honored to be a part of that organization in my career, and obviously, they're playing great this year."
With a shake-up to Edmonton's defence expected with the addition of Ekholm, lines and pairings will be confirmed during warm-ups.

PREVIEW

OILERS vs. MAPLE LEAFS
STREAM: 6:00 p.m. MT; televised on Sportsnet West
Oilers Team Scope
The Oilers are fresh off a heavyweight tilt against the Boston Bruins on Monday night, where the NHL's top team took the two points with a 3-2 victory at Rogers Place.
Connor McDavid continued his sensational season, scoring two goals for the fourth straight game, including his 50th for the first time in his NHL career. The feat came in just 61 games, putting the Oilers captain on pace for 67 on the season. Unfortunately, goals by Tomas Nosek, Nick Foligno, and Pavel Zacha gave the NHL's leaders another notch in the win column.
The Oilers pressed hard for the equalizer, even getting a couple of high-danger chances on a Boston 5-on-3 power play in the game's final minutes, but it wasn't enough to come away with the victory.
Stuart Skinner got the start between the pipes on the evening, turning away 25 of 28 shots in the loss. It won't be known until at least morning skate if Jack Campbell will get a shot at his former team on Wednesday night, a place where he went 51-14-9 with a .916 save percentage over parts of three seasons.
It will be a bit of a new-look lineup for the Oilers on Wednesday after a very busy Tuesday of wheeling and dealing by General Manager & VP of Hockey Operations Ken Holland.
First, Jesse Puljujarvi was sent to the Carolina Hurricanes in exchange for Finnish forward prospect Patrick Puistola. The big move for the Oilers came later in the afternoon when Holland acquired long-time Nashville Predators defender Mattias Ekholm and a sixth-round pick in return for Tyson Barrie, Seattle Thunderbirds forward Reid Schaefer, a 2023 first-round pick, and a fourth-round pick in 2024.
Ekholm is travelling to Edmonton on Wednesday morning with the expectation that he will be in the lineup to take on the Maple Leafs on Wednesday night.
"I think the plan is for me to fly out tomorrow morning and hopefully, knock on wood, everything goes well, and I play tomorrow night," he said. "So that's the plan for now."

Maple Leafs Team Scope
The Oilers took on the first place team in the Atlantic division on Monday and they will take on the second place team on Wednesday in the Toronto Maple Leafs.
The Leafs enter Wednesday's action at Rogers Place with a 37-15-8 record after dismantling the Seattle Kraken by a 5-1 score on Sunday. Auston Matthews scored twice on the evening, while Mitch Marner recorded three assists in the victory. Marner currently sits 10th in league scoring with 74 points (20G, 54A) in 60 games. William Nylander continued his march towards a career season with a pair of assists -- the Swedish forward is one-goal away from his career-high with 33 goals, while he's eight points away from tying the 80 points he reached in 2021-22.
The Maple Leafs General Manager Kyle Dubas also had a busy Tuesday of wheeling and dealing, acquiring defenceman Luke Schenn from the Vancouver Canucks for a third-round pick in 2023. The Leafs also dealt Pierre Engvall to the New York Islanders for a 2024 third-round pick, while also sending Rasmus Sandin to the Washington Capitals for defenceman Erik Gustafsson and the Boston Bruins first-round pick in 2023.
The deals come off the heels of the Leafs earlier acquisitions of Jake McCabe and Sam Lafferty from the Chicago Blackhawks and the addition of Ryan O'Reilly and Noel Acciari from the St. Louis Blues in the last 11 days.
"We feel it's another key addition for us, and we feel in both players (McCabe and Lafferty) that it adds more of what we feel we are going to need to give our group the best chance as we get set for clinching our spot in the playoffs and continuing to get ready for the battle that's to come," Dubas said about the previous trade.

By The Numbers
Connor McDavid is currently on a better goal-scoring pace than Auston Matthews was last season in his 60-goal season in 2021-22... Matthews finished the season with 60 goals in 73 games, while McDavid has 21 more games to eclipse the 60-goal mark... McDavid is on pace for 67 goals, which would be the most in the history of the Rocket Richard Trophy which was first awarded to Teemu Selanne in 1998-99... In 15 head-to-head meetings, Matthews has 13 points (10G, 3A) while McDavis has 19 points (5G, 14A)... With two-goals tomorrow, McDavid would be just the third player since 1920 to have a five-game multi-goal streak...
Leon Draisaitl enters the month of March looking for his 18th consecutive 10-or-more point month... William Nylander will be suiting up for his 500th career game in Edmonton, looking to break Borje Salming's record for points by a European-trained player in their first 500 games with the Maple Leafs... Both Swedish forwards are currently tied with 415 points... The Maple Leafs have won 46-straight games when allowing two goals or fewer, breaking the NHL record... Sheldon Keefe and Jay Woodcroft both have a .640 or better winning percentage in their NHL Head Coaching career, top-five among active NHL head coaches... Both coaches have the best points percentage in their franchise's history...
