PRE-GAME REPORT

SUNRISE, FL -The Oilers enter the last game of their road trip the same way they began the trip, looking to find the consistency in their game.
There have been a lot of ups-and-downs in the early part of the season for the club and those issues were only further exacerbated by the recent loss of Evander Kane for the next three-to-four months.
Ahead of Saturday evenings game against last year's Presidents Trophy winners, the Oilers focus turned to translating their work in practice to the games that matter.
"I thought it was a good day. We had a good meeting and went out and did a little bit of work on the ice. In the end, it's about it showing up come game time though. Right now, we talked about it, we use the word sporadic when we want to be automatic," Woodcroft said.
The issues that continue to pop up, like turning the puck over too often, or not taking advantage of opportunities to clear their own zone have hampered the Oilers from reaching their potential. The Oilers have 174 giveaways in their first 15 games and their 11.6 giveaways-per game ranks third last in the NHL.
However it is still early, and there have been some cylinders firing, but with a difficult matchup against the Panthers looming the Oilers know they have to clean things up sooner rather than later.
"Right now we're seeing good things at different times. I thought the first period was a pretty good first period for us. I thought were competitive," Woodcroft said. "We did some things that were self-inflicted that I think we can clean up, but there's some automatics that we want to see, and right now it's not happening enough. As a result, your record or your results are kind of uneven and in order to get the results that we want, we got to make sure that our automatics are taken care."

Edmonton's head coach looked to iron out the rough patches in the Oilers performances through a fast-paced practice, competitive practice at FLA Live Arena ahead of Friday's game. The emphasis was placed on keeping the puck on their sticks and knocking it off the opponents.
"It's something that we've done in the past here as well. I think it's really good because you're working on your stick skills and anytime you add a competitive element to a drill, I think the guys like it," Woodcroft said. "They're they were pretty excited about knocking their buddy's puck away, but then the compete comes out. It's something we've done over the last year or so and pulled it out today just as a way to get started and get everybody in the right frame of mind."

FAMILIAR FOE

Although the Oilers don't make their way to Sunrise very often, there is person they are very familiar with on the Panthers roster. Former Calgary Flames agitator Matthew Tkachuk was dealt to the Panther during the offseason is a massive deal and was then signed to a massive deal, and so far, he has delivered.
The Scottsdale, Arizona native leads the team with 17 points in 12 games and has helped bring a new element to last year's 122-point team that they felt they were lacking.
"I think they're a different team than they were last year. Obviously, he's a good hockey player. I have huge respect for the coaching staff of the Florida Panthers, the people they brought in, and I know that they're going to play us hard, so we better be ready for it," Woodcroft said.
The former sixth-overall pick by the Flames has had a modicum of success against the Oilers, recording 23 points in 28 games -- having only played more games against the Vancouver Canucks throughout his career.
Last year in the post-season, Tkachuk notched a hat trick in the Flames 9-6 win to open their second-round series against the Oilers. However, Edmonton would hold the winger to a single assist and a minus-5 rating in the last four games - all Oilers victories on their way to the Western conference final.
As much as there was a media center-of-attention around the Oilers taking on Matthew Tkachuk, Edmonton's head coach remained focused on the broader picture of the game. Saturday is an opportunity at an important two points with so half the teams in the league sitting between seven and nine wins.
"It's interesting because I think there's a cluster of teams," Woodcroft said. "There's a few teams that have separated from the pack a little bit and got off to great starts, but I think there's a cluster of teams right around where we're at and for us to kind of take a step here, that's where it comes down to. The teams that figure it out quicker are going to be the ones that are going to be in the spot they want to be in."

LINEUP NOTES

It is likely that goaltender Stuart Skinner will get the start in Florida. The 24-year-old is coming off a 26-save performance against the Washington Capitals, where he allowed five goals. However, the young goaltender has been solid in the early part of the season with a 2.62 goals-against average and a .928 save percentage.
The Oilers lines in Friday's practice were as such:
Nugent-Hopkins - McDavid - Puljujarvi
Holloway - Draisaitl - Hyman
Foegele - McLeod - Kostin
Janmark - Shore - Ryan
Nurse - Ceci
Kulak - Bouchard
Murray/Niemelainen - Barrie
Skinner
Campbell
"We're searching for consistency on our back end and we're searching for consistency with forward lines," Woodcroft said about the lineup. "I think when you haven't maybe had the results that you wanted to see, and when I say results, it's not just the win or the loss, but the level of play isn't where we want it to be for long enough periods of time. We're searching for answers as coaching staff and one of the tools that we have at our disposal is to be able to move chess pieces around the chessboard a little bit. And today's practice we did have Nurse and Ceci back together and we think they're a good pair. They've historically shown that and we'll see for tomorrow."

Panthers Team Scope
The 8-5-1 Panthers come into the season with a new look, but a familiar foe when it comes the Edmonton Oilers.
Florida made waves in the offseason with their blockbuster deal, trading former franchise cornerstone Jonathan Huberdeau, MacKenzie Weegar, Cole Schwindt and a conditional 2025 first-round pick to the Calgary Flames in exchange for Matthew Tkachuk and a conditional fourth-round pick.
The former Flames pest has acquitted himself well in the Sunshine State, with 17 points (5G, 12A) -- to go along with 30 PIMs -- in his first 12 games.
The Panthers are coming off a 3-0 victory over the Oilers last opponents in the Carolina Hurricanes, with goaltender Spencer Knight picking up the 40-save shutout.
Nick Cousins scored his first of the season, while Aleksander Barkov and Sam Bennett scored their third goals -- with Bennett's coming with the net empty.
Top Florida defender Aaron Ekblad is expected to return to the Panthers lineup after missing the last 11 games with a lower body injury. In his stead, Brandon Montour has had a great start to the season with 15 points in 12 games.
