PRE-GAME REPORT

BUFFALO, NY - It's desperate times around the National Hockey League as teams fight tooth and nail down the stretch for their place in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
"Right now, it seems like every team is winning games or every team is in desperation mode to gain points," Head Coach Jay Woodcroft said pre-game from KeyBank Center, where the Oilers will face the Buffalo Sabres on Monday night.
"We're going to face one here tonight that's in the race, and in order to feel happy at the end of the evening, you've got to make sure that every person is contributing and that your details are in the right place. That's what we're going to need tonight against a really good Buffalo Sabres team."
The Sabres are on the outside looking into the jam-packed Eastern Conference playoff picture with 68 points and a 32-25-4 record -- three points out of the final Wildcard spot that's currently occupied by the Pittsburgh Penguins with one game in hand.
Buffalo will take to the ice tonight with a win-at-all-costs mentality, with netminder Craig Anderson expected to get the start in goal while forward Jordan Greenway, acquired from the Minnesota Wild at the Trade Deadline, will make his Sabres debut.
The Oilers are not out of the woods in the Pacific Division as they sit six points behind the Vegas Golden Knights in the Western Conference's top Wildcard spot. Edmonton will need to match Buffalo's desperation and work rate to come out with the victory as they continue a tough seven-game stretch against playoff contenders, having dropped their last result 7-5 in Winnipeg.
"They are going to approach this game with an intensity, a level of skill and a level of desperation that we need to not only match, but exceed," Woodcroft said. "I've said this to our group here a lot over the last two or three weeks that we're in the points collection business. We're trying to gain points every night we play.
"Tonight is going to be a tough challenge versus a really deep Buffalo Sabres team."
Following back-to-back games against the Jets, the Oilers had an off day in Buffalo on Sunday to rest and recharge from four games in six days before crossing swords with the Sabres in Western New York tonight.
Edmonton's previous contest saw them score five goals but give up seven, with Coach Woodcroft seeing some early-season errors creep back into their game in a challenging evening against the Jets.

"What I saw in that game on Saturday (was) a lot of fatigue, errors and stuff we hadn't been seeing," he said. "Fourth game in six nights, and it's not an excuse because we're not in the business of making excuses, but I saw some things that I felt we had cleaned up but obviously, we didn't.
"In the end, we scored five goals. That's more than enough to win most games. But sometimes, it's not about what you get and it's about what you give up."
Connor McDavid added that the Oilers could've done a lot more to help their netminder Jack Campbell, who surrendered six goals on 38 shots and was the victim of three deflections.
"I think as forwards we can be in lanes better," McDavid said. "They scored a couple of point-shot goals and we could've helped Soup out that way. I just think as a whole, our details and little box outs in front (can improve). They scored a couple of tip goals and stuff like that, and myself included, we need to do better there."
The Oilers are 2-2-0 so far on their tough seven-game stretch that continues tonight before a rematch against the Boston Bruins on Thursday. It's a modest return of four points in eight games, but what Woodcroft has liked is how his team has been within reach of the two points in every game with a competitive effort.
"I thought we had a chance to win every game," he said. "I think there are areas of improvement that we're going to address here as we move down the stretch. I like our team. I like our competitive spirit. We're never out of any game, but there are things that have to be addressed if we want to take the next step."
McDavid added: "Two-and-two two is nothing to write home about. With that being said though, we've beat two good teams and I thought we played well against Boston. But again, this is a similar type of week. Buffalo is playing really well. They're in a race themselves, so this will be a big game for them.
"It's a big game for us and then we go over to Boston and Toronto all over again. So another big week for us and starts tonight."

AT 'HOLM ON DEFENCE

As a team that's never struggled to score goals in the Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl era, keeping them out of their own net has always been an area of emphasis for the Oilers.
"Obviously, it's no secret we can score goals," McDavid said. "I think everybody knows that. It's about keeping the puck out of our net."
To improve in that area, Oilers GM & President of Hockey Operations Ken Holland acquired Mattias Ekholm from the Nashville Predators at the Trade Deadline, and the move has provided strong early returns during his first three games as an Oiler toward shoring up Edmonton's back end for the playoffs and beyond. After this season, Ekholm has three years remaining with a $6 million cap hit (four percent retained by Nashville).
The defender has posted an assist and a plus-6 rating for Edmonton while averaging over 20 minutes a night, becoming a key figure on the penalty kill and shutting down opponents' top lines in a pairing with Evan Bouchard, who's starting to see growth alongside the Swede in a defensive pairing together.

In three games as a pairing, Ekholm and Bouchard have out-chanced opponents 49-27 and own a 64.47 percentage of total Corsi (CF%), as per Natural Stat Trick.
"He is somebody that's very comfortable in his own skin," Woodcroft said. "He knows what he brings to the table. He plays toward an identity. He doesn't try and get outside of himself. I see someone who has poise with a veteran experience level. I like the way he conducts his business."
It's only been three games for Ekholm with the Oilers, but the bench boss is already seeing some of that veteran experience trickle down to the club's younger blueliners like Bouchard, Philip Broberg and Vincent Desharnais with the example he's already been able to set.
"I watch how he listens to meetings. I watch how he warms up. I watch how his demeanour is when he gets to the rink. He's an impressive individual," Woodcroft said.
"I think he's exactly what our team needed. The side benefit is the example he's setting for some of our other players, specifically some of our younger D-men. I think the effect that it's had on Evan Bouchard is obvious.

LINEUP NOTES

Goaltender Stuart Skinner was in the starter's net while Ryan McLeod was on the top line alongside Connor McDavid and Zach Hyman, signalling that Coach Woodcroft could shuffle his lines and deploy 12 forwards and six defencemen against Buffalo.
Evander Kane participated in the morning skate but isn't expected to make his return to the lineup from an eight-game absence with an upper-body injury.

PREVIEW

OILERS at SABRES
WATCH: 5:30 p.m. MT; televised on Sportsnet
Oilers Team Scope
The Edmonton Oilers are coming off a 7-5 defeat on Saturday in the second of back-to-back games against the Winnipeg Jets that ended in a split after they took the first leg the home-and-home set in Edmonton.
"I think when you get in situations with where the schedule is at, that's when you have to trust your structure and play towards that structure because that protects everybody," Head Coach Jay Woodcroft said. "And tonight, we didn't do a good enough job of that. We scored enough to win, but we didn't defend well enough to win."
The Oilers trailed 2-1 after 20 minutes and looked to have reversed their fortunes early in the second period thanks to a shorthanded goal from Mattias Janmark and power-play marker from Leon Draisaitl, but Adam Lowry's goal 42 seconds later would be the first of four goals for the Jets in the frame.
"We play to win and win the race to make the playoffs, so I'd rather take a one--nothing win," Draisaitl said.

POST-RAW | Leon Draisaitl 03.04.23

The German recorded a hat trick, stretching his point streak to 12 games, and set a new Oilers franchise record with his 25th power-play goal of the season that beats the record he set himself in 2021-22. Connor McDavid followed close behind with his 58th power-play assist on Draisaitl's hat-trick goal, which also represents a franchise best.
Nick Bjugstad, simultaneously making his Oilers debut and playing in his 600th career NHL game on Saturday, scored in the third period and finished with a goal, two shots, one hit, three blocks and winning 4-of-8 faceoffs in 13:17 of ice time.
Edmonton heads to Buffalo for the first of three games this week against tough Eastern Conference opponents who are either firmly in the hunt for a playoff spot (Sabres) or are the hunters themselves (Boston Bruins and Toronto Maple Leafs).
Sabres Team Scope
The Sabres sit three points out of a Wildcard spot in the Eastern Conference with 68 points through 61 games after defeating the Tampa Bay Lightning on Saturday night at KeyBank Arena to end a mini two-game losing streak.
Tage Thompson, Vinnie Hinostroza, Tyson Jost, Jack Quinn and Jeff Skinner all found the back of the net, while netminder and Edmonton native Eric Comrie made 31 saves to win his fourth straight start for a Sabres team that currently has three goalies on their roster (Comrie, Craig Anderson and Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen).
"There was a lot to fight through to make sure we were steadfast and (played) how we wanted to play with pace and pressure, and a lot of things that could've caused ups and downs and distractions," Sabres Head Coach Don Granato said. "I commend our guys staying very dialed in. Because we needed that win. And I think our room knew we needed that win."
"I think we needed a big response after our last game against Boston," Thompson said. "I think we were on our heels a little bit last game and I think tonight coming in we just wanted to make sure that no matter what happened, whether they get a push or not, we're stepping on the gas the whole time."

POST-RAW | Jay Woodcroft 03.04.23

Rasmus Dahlin posted an assist in his return to the Sabres lineup from a three-game absence with a lower-body injury. The 22-year-old defenceman is currently on pace for 84 points, which would break the Sabres record for points in a season by a defenceman set by Phil Housley in 1989-90.
Thompson is third in the NHL for goals with 42 and could become the first Sabres player to finish in top three in the League for goals in 30 years, but has yet to hit 100 goals in his career (98).
Buffalo's 32 wins this season already equal their 82-game total from from last season, but they still find themselves out of a playoff position and in danger of missing the postseason for the 12th straight year.
Their 11 seasons outside of the playoffs is already the longest post-season drought in the NHL, and they'll have to navigate the sixth-strongest remaining schedule to find their way into the playoffs if they don't want that streak to continue. Over their final 21 games, the Sabres have five against top-five teams in points percentage (BOS, CAR, NJ x 2, TOR).
