PRE-GAME REPORT

OTTAWA, ON - With a pair of back-to-back matinees on the horizon, Friday's practice in the nation's capital held extra importance to the Edmonton Oilers as they prepare themselves for two quick afternoon road contests to wrap up a four-game Eastern Conference road trip.
An all-Canadian back-to-back set for the Blue & Orange begins Saturday at Canadian Tire Centre at 10:30 a.m. MT before they quickly pivot to Montreal for a date with the Canadiens at the Bell Centre on Sunday exactly 24 hours later.
With no practices or pre-game skates over the next two days, Friday's twirl at the CTC represented the only chance for Head Coach Jay Woodcroft and the Oilers players to make any necessary adjustments for the quick two-game finale to their road trip that begins against a rising Ottawa Senators team looking to carry their momentum prior to the All-Star break into their first game following the pause.
"For us, we treated today like it's a pre-game skate," the Oilers bench boss, who was named head coach of the Oilers exactly one year ago from Friday, said after practice. "We were able to handle a few of our meetings that would normally happen on a game day because tomorrow happens fast.
"It's at an odd time, but I thought we got up and down the rink and the players feel good heading into tomorrow. We're going to be ready for an Ottawa Senators team that appears to be playing a really good brand of hockey."
The Senators put together a streak of four straight wins prior to the All-Star break that coincided with the recall of forward and NHL rookie Ridley Greig, who looks to have found a home on the second line in between Alex DeBrincat and NHL First Star of the Week Claude Giroux.
"They're fast and dangerous," Woodcroft said. "We have a real respect for what they bring to the table, so we better be ready tomorrow afternoon."

After falling 2-1 in the shootout on Thursday to the Philadelphia Flyers, the Oilers will have their hands full against a young and budding Senators side if they want to extend their 10-game point streak (8-0-2) that's seen them avoid a regulation loss since Jan. 9 against the Los Angeles Kings.
Over that span, the Oilers have ranked top-two in the NHL for points percentage (.900), goals per game (4.60), goals against (2.2), goal differential (+24), and both power-play (37.5 percent) and penalty-kill percentage (93.3 percent).
"Yeah, I think we're really dialled in," centre Ryan McLeod said. "I think we kind of had a little bit of a let-down last game. I think we did some things right, but just not for long enough and we weren't too sharp.
"But I think there's energy in the room and everyone's super excited about the streak this group has put together, so I think we're rolling right now."

The Oilers have just one regulation loss on the road in their last 12 games (9-1-2) and have earned a point in six straight (5-0-1) -- a record that goes hand-in-hand with the return of Evander Kane to the lineup. The 31-year-old has goals in three straight games and Edmonton is 13-6-1 with him in the lineup this campaign.
"I think our game is coming around since the break," captain Connor McDavid said. "We got a big win in Detroit there where we probably didn't play our best, and certainly, we didn't play our best last night either and found a way to get a point. That's what good teams do -- find ways to put points in the bank when maybe you don't have your A-game. We're definitely looking to get back to where were before the break."
Thursday's contest with the Flyers wasn't the aggressive follow-up to Tuesday's win in Detroit that might've been anticipated, but the aggression came in the form of a tight-checking battle for every inch of ice that ultimately came down to one goal in the shootout from James Van Riemsdyk and one extra save from Carter Hart in the Philadelphia net.
While the result might've not gone the way of the Oilers, there were positives for Woodcroft in his team allowing only a single goal in the defeat while keeping themselves once again in a position to win the extra point. Echoing McDavid's thoughts, Woodcroft saw the shootout loss as a point banked by his team in a game that could've gone either way, but there's still a process he wants his team to follow on the path to improvement.

"I think we're in the points-gaining business, and it's hard for me to knock the effort of our players," he said. "We're not always perfect. We make mistakes, but we gave up one goal in regulation yesterday. That's a positive thing.
"I thought we had numerous chances to score. It didn't go in for us. One got called back on us, but we were in a position to win that game. We think if we put ourselves in position to win games, we have the types of players that can break games open on a moment's notice and over the long run, I think that's a recipe for success.
"But we have to continue to hammer on playing the game the right way and not trading chances, but being good defensively as well."

OILERS vs. SENATORS

Oilers Team Scope
Carter Hart made one more save than Stuart Skinner in the shootout of a goaltending duel between the two Edmonton-area netminders and an overall tight-checking battle between the Oilers and Flyers at Wells Fargo Arena in Philadelphia on Thursday night.
Both goalies played exceptionally, with Skinner stopping 35 of 36 in regulation and overtime, but James Van Riemsdyk's winning goal in the shootout earned the Flyers the extra point with a 2-1 victory and snapped Philadelphia's four-game losing skid on home ice.
Despite the loss, the Oilers stretched their point streak to 10 games (8-0-2) for the first time since December 2006.
"I thought both goalies were good. I thought both teams had really good chances, and Stu made every save that we needed him to make," Head Coach Jay Woodcroft said post-game. "The first one goes off a stick and gets up over his shoulder, but he was great and really competitive. Credit to their team and their goalie as well, because they played a hard game and their goalie played well too."
Evander Kane scored Edmonton's lone regulation goal to make it three games in a row for the winger, while Connor McDavid's assist on the play extended his point streak to 14 games overall (9G, 13A) and 16 straight away from Rogers Place.
In the Oilers last 25 road games, the captain has failed to record a point only once.

Senators Team Scope
The Ottawa Senators resume their schedule following the All-Star break on Saturday afternoon trying to return to the strong form they showed in their final few games before the pause.
Entering the break, the Senators had strung together four straight wins for the third time this season, including back-to-back victories over the Montreal Canadiens and a 6-2 thumping of the Toronto Maple Leafs. On Saturday, the Senators can make it five straight for the first time since their six-game win streak during the 2016-17 campaign.
The streak for the club from the nation's capital has coincided with a shake-up of the lines by head coach D.J. Smith following a tough 5-1 loss to the Winnipeg Jets on Jan. 21.
Forward Ridly Greig was recalled from the AHL's Belleville Senators to slot in alongside
Claude Giroux
and
Alex DeBrincat
on the second line, while
Mathieu Joseph
joined
Tim Stützle
and
Brady Tkachuk
on the top unit to add an extra element of speed.
Drake Batherson
occupied the right wing of the third line with centre
Shane Pinto
and former Oiler
Derick Brassard
to round out a balanced top-nine that's helped lead to the Senators outscoring opponents 18-7 in four games, with 12 of those goals for coming at even strength.
Ottawa's strong 5-on-5 play complements a 27.1 percent power play that's second only to Edmonton this season (31.8 percent) -- both of which would be franchise bests if the NHL season ended tomorrow.
