PRE-GAME REPORT

SAN JOSE, CA - With the way the Edmonton Oilers have been playing as of late, they have nothing to fear in the deepest depths of the Shark Tank.
The Oilers continue their three-game road trip on Tuesday night against the San Jose Sharks, having won four straight coming off Sunday's 6-1 victory over the Anaheim Ducks that saw Leon Draisaitl achieve the 50-goal milestone for the second time in his career.
The Sharks, meanwhile, have lost three in a row and look poised to miss the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the third year running.
Edmonton is making the most of their dwindling regular-season schedule, having won 10 of their last 13 games (10-2-1) and outscoring 63 goals during that span to average a league-best 4.85 goals per game during that stretch.
"I think obviously this is the important time of the year," centre Ryan Nugent-Hopkins said. "We have under 20 games left and we're making our push right now. I think things are coming together well for us."
From the drop of the puck on Sunday, the Oilers imposed their high-powered offence on the Ducks and played solid defensively to stamp out any hope of Anaheim working their way back into the game.
It was an encouraging and confident performance after their resolve was tested in the two games prior against the St. Louis Blues and Los Angeles Kings when both sides battled back before the Oilers took the extra point in extra time.

"I thought the other night was a really good start to the game and we kind of kept getting better and better as the game went on," Nugent-Hopkins added. "Against St. Louis, we had a good start then kind of let our foot off the gas a little bit, so we've got to learn from little mistakes like that and keep improving as a group here."
Tonight, the Oilers have the added motivation of being able to take over second place in the Pacific Division from the Kings with a victory before the two teams meet at Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles on Thursday.
"I think it was a good game for us," Tyson Barrie, who posted three points in Sunday's win over Anaheim, said pre-game. "We had a little lapse in the third, but that'll happen. I think we've got 12 games left, and you look at the standings and it's not hard to see where we'll get our motivation from.
"It's a big road trip for us and a huge game tonight before finishing up against LA, so we can't afford to take nights off and we need to have as many good efforts as we can in a row."
A PRODUCTIVE PAIRING
Amidst the many positive storylines from Sunday that included Draisaitl's half-century for goals was a banner night for the pairing of Brett Kulak and Tyson Barrie.
The pairing combined for six points and was a collective plus-nine on the night, with Kulak finding the back of the net for his first goal in an Oilers uniform in the victory.
Barrie acknowledged the contest as one of the best in his career for being on the ice when his team found the back of the net, but when you're the 30-year-old, you have to weigh the best games alongside some of the worst.
"I think I might've had a five or something in there one time, but I've definitely had some the other way too," Barrie said with a laugh.
The blueliner from Victoria, BC acknowledged the performance as one of, if not the best, he's had alongside Kulak since the pairing was formed after the trade deadline, but that bar has begun going higher and higher with every passing game.

"Maybe the most productive for sure," he said. "I think we've played some pretty solid games, but getting a bunch of plusses and being on the ice for a bunch of goals for is nice. I thought he was really good, and we'll look to keep that going."
Each piece of the pairing brings solid puck movement and the ability to utilize their skating to work pucks out of their own zone, whether it be on their own or by putting the puck onto the tape of the Oilers forwards in front of them. As is expected in a pairing that's only been deployed together for seven games so far, the chemistry continues to build.
"We're getting to know each other a little bit, but even the first game we played together, I think he skates so well and he's a smart and intelligent guy when he plays. I'm finding him super easy to play with, so it's been fun."
To Kulak, the pairing's real strides have been made in preventing quick rushes from the opponent from turning into quality scoring chances as they continue to work on communication and their transition game.
"I think it's just defending rushes maybe where we've developed the best," Kulak said following Monday's practice. "We talk to each other lots, and there are still some areas in our game we want to work on and improve.
"One of our strengths is our puck-moving and skating, so I think we can get a little cleaner in our own zone and make breakouts easier on our forwards while spending less time in our own zone."
LINEUP NOTES
After both Draisaitl and Evander Kane were left out of Monday's practice for maintenance days, Head Coach Jay Woodcroft expects both players to play tonight against the Sharks.
"It looks like they're ready to go," he said. "They're going to go out this morning for a little twirl, but as I said yesterday, just a few bumps and bruises.
"We're looking forward to an important game for us tonight."
Mikko Koskinen will also be available for tonight's game at the SAP Center after illness before Sunday's win necessitated the call-up of Stuart Skinner on short notice to back up Mike Smith. Both netminders took part in Tuesday's optional skate, but no starting netminder was confirmed by the bench boss.
Lineups and the starting goalie for Tuesday's game in San Jose will be made apparent during warm-ups.

PREVIEW

OILERS vs. SHARKS
STREAM: 8:30 p.m. MT; televised on Sportsnet West
Oilers Team Scope
The Oilers began their California road trip with a successful 6-1 romp over the Anaheim Ducks on Sunday. The high-scoring affair was capped off by Leon Draisaitl, who potted his 50th of the season to mark the second time in his career he's reached the milestone.
Recently acquired defenceman Brett Kulak is coming off his best performance as a member of the Oilers. The Stony Plain, AB product scored his first goal with the club while adding a pair of assists and a plus-five rating in a pairing with Tyson Barrie.
"Sometimes you do a lot of good things in a game and the numbers aren't pumping off the sheet, but we've been solid and growing together as a partnership out there," Kulak said. "I've been getting better and better every game, but that for me was I think my first three-point night and the first time I've been plus-5 in my career, so any time you do that, it's a fun night.
Edmonton has faired well against the Californian teams this season, currently sporting a 7-1-0 record against the trio of Anaheim, San Jose, and Los Angeles. Another strong performance in San Jose can help make the post-season race even more interesting - the Oilers enter tomorrow's game winners of four in a row and are only one point back of the Los Angeles Kings with two games in hand.
Sharks Team Scope
San Jose is coming off of a 5-4 defeat last Saturday at the hands of the Dallas Stars.
It was forward Joe Pavelski, who spent 13 seasons as a member of the Sharks, that propelled the Stars to victory in the third period with his 25th of the year. The 37-year-old quickly fired a Roope Hintz dish past James Reimer at the 7:44 mark in the third period for what would become the game-winning goal.
The Sharks fell behind early, allowing four first-period goals to the Stars, including a goal by Jason Robertson (his 32nd of the season) with one second remaining in the opening frame.
The goal-scoring outburst was enough to chase starting netminder Kaapo Kahkonen, who only stopped 10 of the 14 shots directed his way. San Jose was able to battle back late with a couple of goals by John Leonard (his first of the season) and Logan Couture, but it ultimately wasn't enough.
The Sharks have struggled to keep pace in the Pacific this season, entering Tuesday's contest with a three-game losing streak and a 3-6-1 record over their last 10 games. The team's 66 points this season only sit ahead of the Seattle Kraken's 50 in the division.
