PRE-GAME REPORT

EDMONTON, AB - Hit the reset button and get right back to work.
After a tough loss on Thursday night to the St. Louis Blues that included late drama, controversy and plenty of emotions, Head Coach Jay Woodcroft's eyes will be on how his Edmonton Oilers team shakes off the defeat and moves on against the Anaheim Ducks in a matinee matchup at Rogers Place on Saturday afternoon.
"What I'm really looking forward to seeing how our team and how individuals respond to last night, and the way we respond is by playing a good game tomorrow," Woodcroft said following Friday's optional Oilers practice.
A one-goal lead and a power play in the final minute of Thursday's game evaporated for the Oilers after the Blues pulled netminder Jordan Binnington to even things up at 5-on-5 before a defensive-zone turnover from Darnell Nurse led to Vladimir Tarasenko tying the game with 20 seconds remaining.
After it looked like Leon Draisaitl had won Edmonton the extra point in overtime, a controversial video review for offside on Connor McDavid overturned the goal and added intrigue to the contest before the Blues won it in the shootout.
After the fact, it was all internal analysis from the Oilers instead of resting the result on an iffy offside call.
"In the end, we didn't get the job done," Woodcroft said. "We're going to use it as a growth opportunity. My focus on what happened yesterday is in the rearview mirror. We've beat that game right up, we've studied it, we've had our meetings and everything like that, so we're going to take it with us as we go forward. Hopefully, it makes us better."
Coach Woodcroft identified in his Friday media availability some of the positive contributions provided by the Oilers over the 65 minutes that gave them the best chance to win the two points -- more successful special teams, steady goaltending and systems structure -- but ultimately, the bench boss attributed the defeat to a single play at the end of regulation that had to be completed.
"I would say I wouldn't overcook this one," he said. "I think we made an error where we turned the puck over on a play that is normally made. We didn't make it and were made to pay. As a result, we got one point instead of two."

Sometimes in hockey, those plays happen and the players and coaches who experience those disappointing moments firsthand accept them as a part of the game. How you learn from those moments and respond in the proper way is paramount.
"What I've learned in my time as a coach is that just like a parent, you can't be a helicopter parent and you can't be a helicopter coach," he added. "We believe we had the right people on the ice. We didn't get the job done, but we try and arm our players with the tools they need to be successful in every situation. Last night, were made to pay when we made a mistake."
A short memory will be required on Saturday in a clash with an Anaheim team that's coming off winning only their second win in regulation all season in Montreal on Thursday.
"But certainly, it was a growing moment and as I said, I'm excited to see how our team and how individuals respond in tomorrow's game versus Anaheim.
LINEUP NOTES
Forwards Ryan McLeod and Warren Foegele were on the ice for Friday's optional skate, with the latter looking to be a potential option for the Oilers on Saturday afternoon against Anaheim.
"Warren Foegele is an available player to us," Woodcroft said.
Foegele collided in the neutral zone with Rangers forward Vincent Trocheck back on Nov. 26 and has missed the last 10 games due to injury. It was looking possible that the Markham, ON product could cut that recovery time in half until a setback pushed his return date further down the line into mid-December.

"Yeah, it was kind of a freak accident," he said. "Don't really know how that happened, but it's never fun to be injured and definitely during the regular season. I thought I was trending in the right direction, so that's what kind of makes it a little bit frustrating. But it's good to be back.
McLeod took to the ice for the first time on Friday since tweaking his ankle in the very same game as Foegele, but remains a ways away from making his return. Nonetheless, Friday was a positive development for the centre.
"Yeah, I thought it was positive that he skated with the group today," Woodcroft said. " It's still not a full team skate, but I thought it was positive that he was out there. I think he's making strides.
"He has the type of injury that you just have to make sure you're monitoring and see how he responds as you kind of ratchet up his work level. So it's positive that he was with our group today."

The Oilers made a pair of roster moves on Friday, placing centre Brad Malone on waivers for the purpose of assignment to the Bakersfield Condors before recalling defenceman Markus Niemelainen.

OILERS vs. DUCKS

Oilers Team Scope
The Edmonton Oilers lost 4-3 to the St. Louis Blues in the shootout on Thursday night at Rogers Place in what was a tough result to take for the Blue & Orange.
The Oilers had a late lead and a power-play opportunity in the last minute, but a breakdown in the defensive zone led to Vladimir Tarasenko tying the game with 20 seconds remaining to force overtime.
"It's disappointing because the game is right there, but you move on," defenceman Tyson Barrie, who had three assists, said post-game. "It's a game of mistakes, that's why people come and watch and obviously we've got to learn how to close those ones out."
Edmonton and Leon Draisaitl thought they had the winner when the German finished off a rebound past Binnington, but a review triggered by the NHL Situation Room in Toronto for offside on the previous zone entry from Connor McDavid overturned the Oilers game-winner. Jordan Kyrou scored in the skills competition, while Binnington made all three stops to earn St. Louis the extra point.
"We kind of get burned on a call in the playoffs over a similar type of situation," McDavid said of the review. "You don't know if it's offside or onside, but the league's got to clarify some of these rules -- what's a kick, what's offside, what's goalie interference -- kind of depends on the night, I guess. So disappointing. Obviously, we should never even let it get to that point."
After Saturday's matinee against the Ducks, the Oilers hit the road for two games against the Nashville Predators and Dallas Stars.

Ducks Team Scope
Defenceman John Klingberg scored twice for the Anaheim Ducks on Thursday, breaking a third-period 2-2 tie with the Montreal Canadiens in a 5-2 win at Bell Centre that marks only their second regulation win of the campaign.
"We've got such a good group in here, we're so connected and so tight that I mean at this point nothing really rattles us," forward Trevor Zegras said. "We know where we're at and we just kind of stick together in these situations, and obviously that Klingberg goal was a big one."
Goaltender Lukas Dostal made only his fifth NHL start with the loss of John Gibson and Anthony Stolarz to injury in the crease, but stopped 23 shots to earn his second NHL victory. The Czech goalie will carry the bulk of Anaheim's goaltending duties with their starting tandem out.
"You know, when you're a team like we are right now in a kind of full rebuild mode, it is tough to sustain it, but that's our goal every night," Ducks Head Coach Dallas Eakins said. "I do think we're better than our record, but our record is our record and we own it. So I did like how we played overall."
Anaheim snapped a four-game winless skid and nine-game losing streak on the road with the victory, while improving to 8-20-3 on the season. The Ducks look to win consecutive games in regulation for the first time since January 27-29, 2022 on Saturday.
Saturday's afternoon meeting with Edmonton rounds out a four-game Canadian road trip for the Ducks, who were shutout 7-0 and 3-0 in back-to-back losses to the Toronto Maple Leafs and Ottawa Senators.
