EDMONTON, AB - After releasing the Seattle Kraken upon the NHL nine games ago, the Edmonton Oilers look to return the Pacific Division beast back to the depths.
The Oilers handed the Kraken their most lopsided loss of the season in the form of a 7-2 defeat at Climate Pledge Arena back on Dec. 30, ultimately opening the gates for the Kraken to surge out on an eight-game win streak that was truck down Monday night by the Tampa Bay Lightning.
Seattle's win streak began at home with a win over the New York Islanders on New Year's Day before the recent NHL expansion side started a franchise-record seven-game road trip that kicked off in Edmonton with a revenge 5-2 result at Rogers Place over the Oilers.
That come-from-behind victory over the Oilers ultimately kickstarted the Kraken's sweep of their extended road trip to become the first NHL team to go 7-0-0 on a seven-game trip.
"I would think maybe in the first one in their building, we built that early lead and sailed from there," Head Coach Jay Woodcroft recalled. "But in the second game, I think we were up 2-0, so I didn't think anything got away on us there. I thought we fell asleep for maybe eight minutes or so in the second period and that hurt us."
Seattle's win streak may have ended, but the momentum generated by the Kraken from the eight-game heater has them firmly entrenched in the Pacific Division's top three -- five points ahead of the Oilers in the top Wild Card spot in the Western Conference with two games in hand.
"I think they have balance to their group. I think they can score goals," Woodcroft added. "They've been getting good goaltending here, especially on this streak. They're a good team and they're going to push us in ways that we need everybody going."
"We can't have any passengers tonight and we need everybody going for the full 60 minutes."

Edmonton will try to string together 60 minutes of solid hockey to take advantage of the Kraken playing the second of a back-to-back in order to ignite their home record at Rogers Place this season that's fallen short of expectations to the tune of 10-11-2.
"Really big, especially here on home ice," captain Connor McDavid said. "It's something that we've got to figure out. Playing Seattle, a team that is really feeling it, they were in here not too long ago and beat us, so it's a good chance to redeem that."
"I think in order to beat this team, you have to have everybody going and you have to have a level of execution and intensity about you for a full 60 minutes," Woodcroft said. "I thought that's where we came up short at home versus them. Obviously, you don't win the amount of games they've won on the road in a row without doing some good things. They've beat some good teams here."

KANE YOU FEEL IT?

The Oilers are adding some extra juice to their lineup and the locker room at the right time ahead of an important Pacific Division battle on Tuesday night.
The path has been paved for Evander Kane to make his long-awaited return to the Oilers lineup tonight against the Kraken after being activated off Long Term Injured Reserve (LTIR) following Tuesday's practice.
Kailer Yamamoto and Ryan Murray were both placed on LTIR in a corresponding move to make room for the 31-year-old. Defenceman Markus Niemelainen was also loaned back to the AHL's Bakersfield Condors on Monday.
Kane missed 31 games over the last 10 weeks he spent recovering from a cut wrist sustained back in November during the second period of Edmonton's 3-2 win over the Tampa Bay Lightning, but throughout his recovery, Kane never left the team's side by joining his teammates on road trips, keeping his in-season routine, and continuing to contribute to the culture within the Oilers locker room.

"He comes to the rink every day with juice. He comes to the rink with a passion for the game and his teammates," Woodcroft said. "He's been travelling with us for quite some time because he likes being around our group, and he provides energy. He wanted to stay and keep his mind sharp, as well as keep his body."
Off the ice, Kane is a locker-room leader for the Oilers. On the ice, he backs up his importance to the club with his speed, skill, physicality and intensity that's helped lead to him scoring 40 goals and recording 69 points in 72 regular-season and playoff games for the Oilers since his signing last January.
"I think some people only lead from the throat, but I think the good part about Evander is that he backs it up with his play, too," Woodcroft said. "He shows up every game he works. He's a very detailed hockey player. He's got a lot of good habits in his game, and he's someone that, like I said at the start of that answer, brings juice.
"You know he's in the building. He's not just someone who kind of melds into the background. He's a good teammate and a valued player in our organization."

GET KRAKEN ON HOME ICE

High on the Oilers chopping block for improvements to be made in the second half of the regular season is improving results on home ice.
"We love playing in front of our fans. We love playing in this building," McDavid said. "Obviously, we can't quite put our finger on it. I think it just comes down to maybe playing a little bit of a road style at home keeping it a little simpler."
More of Edmonton's woes this season have come at home rather than on the road, where the Oilers are an impressive 14-7-2 on the year. But at home, the Oilers are an uninspiring 10-11-2 that includes defeats in six of their last seven games on home ice (1-4-2).
After assembling three solid road victories in a row into a three-game win streak heading back to Rogers Place, the Oilers hope to utilize that road mindset to build some momentum on home ice beginning tonight in an important divisional matchup with plenty of playoff implications.

"Yeah, I hope so," Woodcroft answered. "This team that we're playing, this is the third time we play them in essentially three weeks. They know what we like to do, we know what they like to do. We know what their strengths are. We know where we want to put certain points of emphasis in the game.
"Whether we play this in Seattle or Edmonton or Hudson Bay, it doesn't matter. We have to bring our level of execution and a level of intensity about us in order to beat this team. They're directly in front of us in the standings. We understand for us to make some headway here, we have to start doing putting more and more games together, and one of the areas of emphasis for us is to improve our home record. That starts tonight."

Oilers Team Scope
The Oilers will enter Tuesday night's game riding the high of a three-game win streak -- all on the road and over Pacific Division opponents.
In their most recent contest on Saturday night, the Oilers defeated the division-leading Vegas Golden Knights in the second game of a back-to-back by a 4-3 score. Despite the travel, the Oilers had one of their most consistent performances of the season against their divisional rivals, restricting a pressing Golden Knights club to 30 shots on the evening while putting up 37 of their own.
"Without being under siege, without taking a foot off the gas, I think we just played our game in that third period. So credit to our players," Woodcroft said after the game. "We talked a lot about continuing what we were doing to build the lead, making sure that their defense had to go back and fetch pucks and work through five of us in order to get back to our end. I thought it was a really competitive, entertaining hockey game. There were some moments we'd like to have back in it on the defensive side, but for the most part, I thought we controlled most of that game."
Jack Campbell picked up his third consecutive victory and fourth in-a-row among games he actually started, with his relief appearance against the Kings in which the Oilers were already trailing 3-1 being his only blemish.
Mattias Janmark opened the scoring with his fourth goal of the season, completing his revenge tour against his former clubs. All of the Swede's goals this season have been scored against his previous team's in Dallas, Chicago, and Vegas.
Leon Draisaitl scored a pair, while Klim Kostin netted his seventh goal in the last nine games to wrap up the Oilers offence on the evening. Importantly for the Oilers, all of their goals against Vegas came at even strength, as the team continues to trend upward in that category.

Kraken Team Scope
It looks as if the Oilers have 'unleashed the Kraken' dating back to their Dec. 30 contest in which Edmonton picked up the 7-2 victory in Seattle. After the Oilers beatdown in the Emerald City, the Kraken had reeled off eight straight victories, including a 5-2 decision at Rogers Place until their 4-1 loss to Tampa Bay on Monday night.
Over their eight-game-win streak, Seattle was averaging 5.13 goals-per game while only allowing 2.00 for their opponents on their way to second place in the Pacific Division.
Their win streak was finally snapped on Monday by the Lightning who scored three third-period goals on their way to a 4-1 win. Seattle's lone goal was scored by defenceman Vince Dunn, who is off to a career-best start to his season. In 43 games, the former St. Louis Blues defender has 32 points (8G, 24A) and is fifth in the NHL with a plus-27 rating in his second year with the Kraken.
Seattle has been riding the hot streak of goaltender Martin Jones, who is currently 7-0 with a 1.86 goals-against average and a .926 save percentage since the calendar flipped over to 2023. It was back-up netminder Philipp Grubauer who started against the Lightning on Monday, allowing only two goals on 29 shots with Tampa capitalizing on two empty-net goals.

The Oilers top-ranked power play also has the most PP opportunities this season with 163 on the year... Despite their recent road success, the Oilers are only 1-4-2 over their last seven home games... Edmonton ranks first in the NHL in second-period goals with 62 this season, while their Tuesday night opponents rank second with 61... Connor McDavid and Leon Draisatil lead all NHL players in points versus the Kraken with 11 and 10 respectively...
The Kraken have the third-best road point percentage in the NHL with a .773% due to their 16-4-2 record... Seattle average a league high 4.41 goals-per game while on the road this season... Seattle owns the league's best percentage of goals allowed at 5-on-5 at 65.9 per cent... the Oilers are third in the league in that category at 69.6 per cent... The Kraken have struggled to keep goals out of their net on the penalty kill, with the NHL's second worst PK at 68.7 per cent...
Seattle has seen scoring throughout their lineup with a league-high 12 players scoring at least 20 points this year... Rookie Matty Beniers has begun to show why he's the Kraken's NHL All-Star nominee, leading the team with 36 points (17G, 19A) on the season and 11 points in his last eight games...
