PRE-GAME REPORT

EDMONTON, AB - Stop. Hammer time.
Forward and Edmonton, AB product James Hamblin will make his NHL debut in front of friends and family on Monday night at Rogers Place when the Edmonton Oilers host the Florida Panthers in a one-off meeting before the team heads out on the road for back-to-back games in Chicago and Minnesota.
"Obviously it's a dream come true," Hamblin said. "I'm so excited just for the opportunity to be here, to be around the guys. It's a lot of hard work put in and a lot of years of grinding to get here, so I'm just so happy for me and for everyone that's been there with me the whole journey."
Hamblin was recalled from the Bakersfield Condors on Sunday night with fellow Edmonton, AB product Tyler Benson after forwards Ryan McLeod and Kailer Yamamoto were placed on Injured Reserve.
Warren Foegele will also be absent from Edmonton's lineup after being involved in a collision with Vincent Trochek in Saturday's third-period 4-3 comeback victory over the New York Rangers.
"It's tough seeing a few guys get hurt, especially Clouder and Foegele, they're great guys in the room that just bring energy," goaltender Stuart Skinner said. "They're great players that work hard, do the little things right, and then obviously, their line was humming in New York too. So obviously a tough loss, but we have good guys coming in and it doesn't change anybody else's job. We've got work to do, and everything stays the same."

With a number of injuries within the forward camp of the Oilers, Monday will be a stern test for a number of the Blue & Orange's depth players against a formidable and talented Florida team.
Players like Hamblin will be immediately called upon to contribute up front for the Oilers, who'll have several regulars out of the lineup in Evander Kane, Yamamoto, McLeod and Foegele.
There's precedent to their potential to have an impact and provide some much-needed dpeth scoring after Dylan Holloway notched his first NHL goal, defenceman Evan Bouchard scored twice and McLeod contributed three assists against the Rangers on Saturday at Madison Square Garden.
"What an opportunity it is for some people," Head Coach Jay Woodcroft said. "I think every player craves more. They want to play more. They want to play more on privileged ice time on special teams and that type of thing. When there are injuries that happen, it's that next-man-up philosophy… We just wanted them to bring what separates them as a player to the table this evening and there is ice time available, so we're open for business on who wants it."

PRE-RAW | Zach Hyman 11.28.22

"Guys are going to have more of an opportunity to make a name for themselves, so it's exciting for them," Forward Zach Hyman added.
Receiving immediate contributions from the likes of Hamblin and Benson will be critical to the Oilers being able to build off Saturday's high-action and exciting win over the Rangers that saw Edmonton overturn a 3-0 deficit in the final 20 minutes thanks in large part to the on-ice influence of McLeod and Foegele.
"Yeah, it's important," Hyman said. "I think it's unfortunate timing because those guys who were hurt in Foegs and Clouder had a big impact on the game and were obviously feeling good. Then, they go out and they get hurt, so it happens all across the league. You have players who are an important part of your team that are out, and usually when injuries start to pile up, they happen in succession."
"We have four guys up front who are out right now, so I think it's important and it's a good test for our team."
TAKING A GAMBLE ON HAMBLIN
At every step of James Hamblin's professional career, there have been naysayers.
The 5-foot-9 forward went undrafted to the NHL after five seasons with the WHL's Medicine Hat Tigers, three of which he wore the 'C' as club captain. He navigated AHL deals with the Bakersfield Condors with exceptional dedication to the little things in the game, eventually earning an NHL contract with a two-year, entry-level deal he signed back in March of this year.
"I saw James when he first came into the organization on an American League deal in Bakersfield," Woodcroft said. "I did a little bit of background work. It was during the pandemic year. We played about half a year and I saw a guy come in that wasn't the biggest guy in the world, but he was somebody who just kept showing up doing good things on the ice in the video sessions."
The local product shined at this summer's Young Stars Classic in Penticton, then made a massive impression at Oilers Main Camp before being one of the last cuts ahead the start of the 2022-23 NHL regular season.
"I saw somebody take a step, somebody who did all the necessary things on his development path to earn an NHL contract," Woodcroft said. "I saw somebody come into NHL training camp this year and make it until the very last day."

PRE-RAW | James Hamblin 11.28.22

With no deterrence to his drive, Hamblin continued to lead by example before injuries to the Oilers led to his call-up and inclusion in tonight's lineup against the Panthers.
When he received the call from Oilers Assistant General Manager Keith Gretzky telling him he'd be on the way to Edmonton instead of playing for the Condors in Saturday's meeting with the San Jose Barracuda, the emotions got the best of him.
"A lot of tears were shed right off the bat," Hamblin said. "Just like I said, a lot of hard work put in to get to this point, so kind of a rush of emotions. I immediately called my dad and hardly even got it out to him, so it's just super cool to be here and I'm just thankful for the opportunity."
The first person that came to mind after the call-up was his mother Gina, who'd been there every step of the way until her tragic passing from cancer in September of 2017.
"I think number one is my mom," he said. "I think that was the first thought in my head when I got the call. She did so much for me. I wouldn't be here without her, so my initial thoughts are just straight to her and I'm just so thankful for her."
Woodcroft witnessed Hamblin's growth first-hand in Bakersfield and heralded him as the perfect example of a player who put his future into his own hands by working his way up the ladder by setting the standard for work ethic and determination at every turn and every level.

PRE-RAW | Jay Woodcroft 11.28.22

"He's relentless. He's a relentless person," Woodcroft commented. "Driven to be the best that he can be and maximize the potential that he has as a hockey player."
Some players within the locker room have had the privilege of seeing Hamblin's hard work long before he entered the Oilers organization. With the call-up of Benson with Hamblin, there are now three members of the 2012-13 South Side Athletic Club AAA U15 Lions when you add in netminder Stuart Skinner to the list.
"I've had the privilege to be a part of that journey beside him," Skinner said. "I've been able to train with them in the summertime and see how hard he works in the gym. He's always the first guy here, always the last guy to leave. He's just so disciplined, so detailed in the way he works and the way he shows up every single day. He's a great guy, and he's just so hungry.
"Just like I was saying before, he's never going to stop until he makes a name for himself and I hundred percent believe in him. He's a great player. He does things right; block shots and a two-way player. He can score goal, especially on the backhand, so he deserves it."
LINEUP NOTES
Skinner was the first goalie off the ice at this morning's optional skate and is projected to be tonight's starter for the Oilers against the Panthers.
Yamamoto's placement on the IR was retroactive to his last appearance in a 3-2 win on Nov. 8 over the Tampa Bay Lightning, meaning the Spokane, Wash. product could be back as soon as this week's back-to-back road trip against the Blackhawks and Wild after participating in Edmonton's last two practices.

PRE-RAW | Stuart Skinner 11.28.22

"I would say Yamamoto is more day-to-day than week-to-week," Woodcroft said. "I think it's positive that he was on the ice with the team yesterday and today, putting in good work. Ultimately, he's got to get cleared in order to come off that IR, but I think he's going in the right direction here.
"Benson, who was down below, is back from his conditioning stint as well, and he's been activated as well," Woodcroft added.
Forward Warren Foegele is day-to-day after colliding with New York Rangers forward Vincent Trochek on Saturday afternoon.

PREVIEW

OILERS vs. PANTHERS
STREAM: 7:30 p.m. MT; televised on Sportsnet West & One
Oilers Team Scope
The Oilers return home after a three game New York road trip where they went 1-2, but had a couple solid performances.
After Edmonton was blanked by a 49 save performance by Ilya Sorokin and the Islanders, they rebounded with an exciting third-period comeback against the Rangers.
"We had good moments in those games. There were moments that we want to have back that we can clean up," Had Coach Jay Woodcroft said about the road trip. "We felt we had a chance to win all three of those games."
The Oilers allowed an opening goal to Alex Lafreniere in the first 2:20 of the contest, in what was a relatively quiet first period compared to the rest of the game.
The second saw the Rangers score two quick goals, but both were challenged by Woodcroft -- one for offside and one for goaltender interference -- with the Oilers winning both challenges. However, New York would notch a pair of goals that counted off the sticks of Chris Kreider and Julien Gauthier to finish the middle period with a 3-0 lead, despite being outshot 24-17 at that point.

RAW | Jay Woodcroft 11.27.22

Edmonton would come roaring back with their secondary scoring doing the work. A pair of goals by Evan Bouchard and the first career goal by Dylan Holloway knotted the game a 3-3 with half the third remaining. The Oilers would get a powerplay with 2:26 remaining after Lafreniere ripped Tyson Barrie's helmet off in a scrum behind the Oilers net.
Eventually, Leon Draisaitl would tap home the game winner at the side of the Rangers net to propel the Oilers to victory.
"It was nice to come away with a win, to feel good about ourselves going back on the plane last night," Woodcroft said after practice on Sunday. "Today it's about coming back and preparing for a Florida Panthers team that plays hard."
Panthers Team Scope
The Panthers come to Edmonton with a 10-8-3 on the season.
The two teams last got together in South Florida back on November 12, with the Oilers walking away with a 4-2 victory. Stuart Skinner made 40 saves in the win, defenceman Tyson Barrie scored a pair of goals, and Warren Foegele notched the game winner on the afternoon.
Florida is coming off a 5-4 overtime defeat to the St. Louis Blues on Saturday in a game where goaltender Spencer Knight turned aside 32 of 37 shots he faced.
The Panthers jumped out to a 4-1 advantage through two periods with goals from Aaron Ekblad, Radko Gudas, Carter Verhaeghe, and Anton Lundell. Much like the Oilers previous opponent in the New York Rangers, Florida conceded four-straight goals with Jordan Kyrou scoring his ninth of the season in overtime to give the Blues the win.
The Panthers are expected to be without superstar centre Aleksander Barkov who missed last game with an illness. The 27-year-old currently has 18 points (5G, 13A) in his first 19 games of the season.

RAW | Kailer Yamamoto 11.27.22

By The Numbers

Draisaitl's game winning goal on Saturday was the 47th of his career, which is fifth in Oilers history...

Matthew Tkachuk is currently off to the best start of his career with 27 points (9G, 18A) in his first 21 games... Tkachuk's 105 points in the calendar year only trail Connor McDavid's 107...
