PRE-GAME REPORT

TEMPE, AZ - The Oilers will give it the old college try tonight on the campus of Arizona State University in an attempt to cool off an Arizona Coyotes team that has been red-hot recently at Mullett Arena.
The desert dogs are undefeated in regulation over their last eight games at their new temporary home rink in Tempe, going 6-0-2 over that span and boosting their record to 20-11-4 while playing in the Valley of the Sun.
"You look at how they're playing post-trade deadline, their record commands attention and their home record here commands attention," Head Coach Jay Woodcroft said following Monday's morning skate. "We better be ready. I think they're going to give us everything we can handle."
The Coyotes did just that last Wednesday back in Edmonton, holding 2-1 and 3-2 leads before ultimately dropping a 4-3 overtime decision to the Oilers as Connor McDavid converted his 60th goal of the season in the sudden-death period. The Blue & Orange are gunning for a season sweep of Arizona tonight after also beating them 8-2 in Edmonton on Dec. 7.
Monday's venue presents a departure from the norm of what NHL teams are used to in terms of their arena setup. The Oilers will be playing in front of 4,600 fans -- albeit a capacity, sell-out crowd -- instead of more than 18,000, and their walk from the dressing room to the rink will include a brief outside portion as they navigate from the NHL annex facilities to the arena itself.

But with just nine games left on their regular season schedule and the Stanley Cup Playoffs right around the corner, where the team is playing is significantly less important than how the team is playing, said Coach Woodcroft.
"Everybody on our team -- and where we're at in our life cycle as a team -- understands how important it is to make sure our game is where it needs to be come game 83," he said.
"And right now we're in a battle in our Pacific Division, a division where it seems like the leaders always seem to gain points. There are two points up for grabs tonight, so if we play it at Mullett Arena, if we play it at Rogers (Place), or if we play it up in Hudson Bay, it doesn't matter. There are two points for grabs and that's what our attention is on. I have a good faith in our leadership group to make sure our heads are in the spot that they needs to be in."
      JACK BACK IN NET
With the Oilers playing back-to-back road games to start the week, travelling to Vegas right after tonight's tilt, Jack Campbell will start between the pipes for just the third time this month. His last action came in a 28-save, 5-4 overtime victory over the San Jose Sharks one week ago at Rogers Place, but prior to that triumph he hadn't made an appearance since March 4 and hadn't won since Feb. 11.

          PRE-RAW | Jack Campbell 03.27.23

"Obviously it hasn't been the season that I expected of myself, but there's still some hockey left and I just want to keep finding my game each day," said the 31-year-old puck-stopper.
"Tonight is just another step in that direction, going out and playing my game and trying to have some fun. I definitely believe in my ability. I just want to keep working on it and show these guys what I can do."
Campbell sports an 18-9-4 record with a 3.57 goals-against average and .882 save percentage.
"He's a proud person, number one," Woodcroft said. "He's not happy with his play. I think that's fair to say in terms of it's not where he wants it to be. The one thing I would say is he's helped our team win games. Regardless of what his personal statistics or numbers are, he's found saves in the games that we've won to help us win, and he gets an opportunity tonight."
The bench boss added his impressions of how vital the rest of the team feels their role can be in helping Campbell post positive results.
"I think it's important," Woodcroft said. "I think both of our goaltenders endear themselves to their teammates. Both of our goaltenders inspire a want-to-play-for attitude, not a have-to-play-for attitude, in our players. They're both popular people. They both give everything that they have, and they give us a chance to win."

              Oilers Team Scope
The Oilers enter Monday night's contest looking to avoid the same fate that afflicted them on Saturday against the Vegas Golden Knights.
Edmonton took part in their third consecutive overtime contest, with the 4-3 defeat to the Pacific Division leaders being the only game the Oilers did not garner the full two points.
The Blue & Orange were forced to battle back several times on the night, with the Golden Knights scoring the game's first goal 1:01 into the contest off the stick of Jack Eichel.
Zach Hyman answered for the Oilers, banging home his 31st goal of the season off a slick one-touch pass by Leon Draisaitl to knot the game up at 1-1. Goals by Pavel Dorofeyev and Jonathan Marchessault were matched by Draisaitl's 45th of the season, which also happened to be his NHL Salary Cap Era record 28th tally on the man advantage, and a late snipe by Warren Foegele to send the game into overtime.
The Oilers would have a few opportunities in the 3-on-3 frame, but after a long shift hemmed the Oilers in their own zone, Nicolas Roy took advantage of a mistake 2:26 into extra time for the game winner.
Stuart Skinner got the start between the pipes for Edmonton, turning away 30 of 24 shots in the loss.
"I think what you do is pay attention," Head Coach Jay Woodcroft said after the defeat. "I think both teams were prepared to play the game tonight. Both teams did good things, both teams had moments. I thought our best moments were in the second period, but in the end, we got one point tonight in the regular season. They found a way to score a goal in 3-on-3 overtime off a breakdown."

                  POST-RAW | Warren Foegele 03.25.23

                  Coyotes Team Scope
The Coyotes are fresh off a similar fate to the Oilers, losing to the Colorado Avalanche by a 4-3 score in the shootout on Sunday night.
Following a scoreless first period, the Avalanche jumped out to a 2-0 advantage in the second courtesy of Mikko Rantanen's 48th goal of the season and Bowen Byram's eighth. The Coyotes were able to battle back midway through the third when Mattias Maccelli fired home his own rebound at the 9:23 mark for his eighth goal of his campaign, to cut the deficit to 2-1.
The Coyotes levelled the game when former Bakersfield Condors defenceman Michael Kesslering slipped a feed by Devon Toews to give Christian Fischer the breakaway opportunity on Alexandar Georgiev. The Coyotes forward beat Georgiev glove side for his 12th goal, giving Kesselring his first NHL point.
Valeri Nichushkin and Clayton Keller traded goals, including Keller's 36th goal and 80th point, to send the game to overtime. After the 3-on-3 solved nothing, Nichuskin scored the lone shootout goal to give the visiting Avalanche the victory.
"We pushed back really hard, and we played really hard. They're not a team that you can come back against a lot," Coyotes Head Coach Andre Tourigny said. "In the end, we fought really hard."
