EDMONTON, AB - The Edmonton chapter of the Professional Hockey Writers Association announced Monday that Derek Ryan is the Oilers nominee for the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy.
The Masterton Trophy is an annual award under the trusteeship of the PHWA and is given to the National Hockey League player who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey.
The 36-year-old forward has scored 13 goals in 78 games this year, tied for the second-most tallies of his seven-year NHL career. He also has six assists for 19 total points.
The former University of Alberta Golden Bear also has a career-best two shorthanded markers, helping Edmonton lead the NHL in goals while on the penalty kill with 17.
Ryan will look to become the first Oilers player to win the Masterton Trophy since it was first awarded in 1968. The NHL Awards will be held Monday, June 26 in Nashville.
