The Edmonton Oilers have announced their 2017 Rookie Camp roster, which will play in the Young Stars Classic being held in Penticton, BC from September 8-11 and face off against the MacEwan-NAIT All-Star Team on September 13 at Rogers Place.
The Oilers Rookie Camp will open on Thursday, September 7 with medicals and fitness testing at Rogers Place before traveling to Penticton for the Young Stars Classic. After returning from Penticton on September 11, the Oilers rookies will wrap up rookie camp with a game against the MacEwan-NAIT All-Star Team on September 13 at 7:00 PM at Rogers Place. Tickets can be purchased at www.Ticketmaster.ca.
Edmonton's rookie roster features 11 NHL draft picks, including 2017 first round pick Kailer Yamamoto (22nd overall), 2016 second round pick Tyler Benson (32nd overall) and 2017 third round selections Stuart Skinner (78th overall) and Dmitri Samorukov (84th overall).
In addition, the Oilers will feature free agent signings Joseph Gambardella (UMass-Lowell, Hockey-East), Ryan Mantha (Niagara, OHL) and Shane Starrett (Air Force Academy, AH). In past seasons, the Oilers rookie roster has included a number of players who are now on their NHL roster, including Matthew Benning, Drake Caggiula and Jesse Puljujarvi, who played at the Young Stars Classic in 2016, and went on to play in the NHL in 2016-17.
The Oilers have played in the Young Stars Classic Tournament since its first year in 2011. Over the years, Edmonton's roster at the tournament has also included future Oilers such as Connor McDavid, Leon Draisaitl, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Oscar Klefbom and Darnell Nurse.
