With a focus on technical skill development, fall 2018 sessions will offer four skill specific camps which focus on individual skill development, challenging the athlete both physically and mentally. The four camps include: Skating and Skills Development, Checking and Defensive Skills, Shooting and Scoring Skills as well as Goaltending.
Oilers Hockey Institute sessions will focus on committed athletes currently playing in Atom, Peewee and Bantam.
"This season we are bringing a focus to technical skill development by offering key camps that will help elevate a participant's game," said Rick Carriere, Program Director, Hockey Programming with Oilers Entertainment Group. "Athletes will work on refining and improving individual skills to enhance their overall game. Our on-ice instruction is exceptional and brings together talent from across the hockey spectrum, including the NHL, CHL and U Sports, and will help participants develop as athletes and hockey players."
Oilers Hockey Institute programming will be led by Chris Joseph and Fernando Pisani, two distinguished Oilers Alumni. Pisani and Joseph both bring extensive coaching backgrounds and technical skill development to the program. In addition, they will use the latest technology to provide immediate feedback to athletes, helping them create awareness of their bodies, make adjustments quickly and learn and grow as players.
Fernando Pisani spent eight seasons in the National Hockey League (NHL), helping lead the Oilers to the Stanley Cup Finals in 2006. Following retirement, Pisani took up a spot behind the bench as he joined the coaching staff of the University of Alberta Golden Bears men's hockey team, helping lead them to multiple National Championships. Presently, Fernando serves as a Development Coach for the Western Hockey League's (WHL) Edmonton Oil Kings.
Chris Joseph spent 14 seasons in the NHL and several years playing professionally in Europe before retiring in 2006. He quickly took to the ice coaching minor hockey and soon began hosting his own hockey schools with a focus on teaching the fundamentals. Building a strong technical base is an essential part of Chris' hockey philosophy.
"I look forward to getting out there and helping local hockey players achieve their best on and off the ice," said Joseph. "I strongly believe that players can work hard and have fun at the same time and I hope to bring that to the ice this fall. I want to give back to the game that gave me so much and hopefully pass on a love of hockey to the next generation."
Joseph and Pisani will be supported by a combination of elite level coaches, local National Hockey League (NHL) alumni, including fellow Oilers Alumni, and former Canadian Hockey League (CHL) and CIS hockey players. Oilers Alumni instructors include Jeff Deslauriers (Oilers goaltender, 2008 to 2010), Shawn Belle (Oilers defenceman, 2010), and Mark Fistric (Oilers defenceman, 2013).
Oilers Hockey Institute will once again operate out of the Downtown Community Arena, adjacent to Rogers Place. For fall 2018, Oilers Hockey Institute will run four skills camps, consisting of sessions once a week on Monday or Wednesday nights for a duration of three weeks, starting November 12. Individuals who register for two or more skill specific camps will receive a 15% discount. Registration is open and will be executed on a first-come, first-served basis. Stay tuned for more information on the winter 2018 sessions.
