EDMONTON, AB - Following the announcement earlier this month regarding the establishment of the Edmonton Oilers Hall of Fame, the hockey club is pleased to announce the Hall of Fame Selection Committee has chosen Lee Fogolin and Ryan Smyth to be inducted in this year's inaugural class.
Created to honour outstanding contributions or service to the team, the Oilers Hall of Fame may include players, coaches, trainers, staff, executives or any other person whose role or service in the organization since its founding in 1972 is recognized as extraordinary.
Acquired by the Oilers from the Buffalo Sabres through the NHL Expansion Draft prior to their inaugural season in 1979, Fogolin played 586 regular season games with Edmonton, recording 36 goals and 124 assists along with an astounding plus/minus mark of +153. Anchoring the Oilers defence and seeing action in another 78 playoff games, he served as team captain for two seasons and enjoyed a pair of Stanley Cup wins in 1984 and 1985.
Smyth, an Oilers fan favourite, played 971 games for the club over two stints (1994-2007 and 2011-2014). Edmonton's sixth-overall selection in the 1994 NHL Draft, Smyth sits second to only Kevin Lowe in games played for the Oilers and his 126 power-play goals are tied with Glenn Anderson for the most in franchise history. His 296 total goals for the club rank fifth and his 631 points rank sixth.
An emotional leader who inspired teammates and fans alike, Smyth also tallied 22 goals over 68 playoff games including the winner in Game 3 of the 2006 Stanley Cup Final.
