EDMONTON, AB - The Edmonton Oilers have signed defenceman Joel Persson to a one-year contract. The Oilers will assign Persson to the Vaxjo Lakers for the 2018-19 season.
Persson, 24, appeared in 51 games with the Swedish Hockey League's (SHL) Vaxjo Lakers this season, posting 34 points (6G, 28A), eight penalty minutes and a +17 plus/minus rating. He also registered five points (1G, 4A) and a +6 rating in 13 playoff games, helping Vaxjo capture the SHL Championship.
The 5'11", 170-pound defenceman spent six seasons (2011-2017) in Sweden Division 1 with Kristianstads and Tyringe, accumulating 60 points (16G, 44A), 24 penalty minutes and a +28 rating in 121 career games. Persson also recorded 13 points (2G, 11A) and four penalty minutes in 14 career playoff games.
