EDMONTON, AB - Mike Smith has been named the NHL's Second Star of the Month.
The 40-year-old netminder has won a league-best nine straight starts, compiling a 1.66 goals-against average, .951 save percentage and two back-to-back shutouts to help propel the Oilers to an 11-2-1 month of April.
The nine-start streak ties Jacques Plante (1970-71) for the longest win streak by a goalie age 40 or older in NHL history and is only one off from tying the Oilers franchise record of 10 set by Grant Fuhr during the 1985-86 season. He needs one win to reach 300 for his career and become the 11th goalie since 2006-07 to win 300 games.
Smith made at least 30 saves in all nine games while posting back-to-back shutouts over the Nashville Predators and Vegas Golden Knights on April 14-16, along with recording the primary assist on Connor McDavid's game-winning goal in overtime against the San Jose Sharks on April 5.
