Former Bruins defenseman completes his first marathon, joins over 30,000 others in race

Not only is Zdeno Chara an accomplished hockey player, but he's also an accomplished runner now.

The former Boston Bruins captain completed the Boston Marathon on Monday -- his first-ever marathon -- in 3:38:23.

Chara announced last month on Instagram that he would be running in support of the Thomas E. Smith Foundation and The Hoyt Foundation, two charities with Boston ties. According to the donation page, he raised $23,330.

The 6-foot-9 former defenseman ran the race on a rainy day in Boston, wearing a "Team Hoyt" shirt with the Thomas E. Smith Foundation logo included. He towered over many of the other runners along the 26.2-mile course.

Chara was one of about 30,000 to run the race.

Already a Boston legend, the 2011 Stanley Cup champion has once again added to his legacy.
