Penguins defenseman P.O Joseph will represent Team Canada at the 2023 IIHF World Championship, it was announced today by Hockey Canada. This year's World Championship will be held from May 12-28 in Tampere, Finland and Riga, Latvia.
This will mark Joseph's first time representing Canada at an international level.
Joseph, 23, played his first full season with the Penguins in 2022-23, recording five goals, 16 assists, 21 points and a team-leading plus-8 in 75 games during his rookie campaign. Only Dallas' Nils Lundkvist (6) had more goals among rookie defensemen than Joseph's five, while his assist and point totals both ranked fourth among all rookie blueliners this season.
Joseph's five goals were tied with Jeff Petry for the second most among Penguins defensemen this year, trailing just Kris Letang's 12. Only Brian Dumoulin (82) suited up for more games among team defensemen than Joseph (75) this season. The Laval, Quebec native became the 11th rookie defenseman in Penguins history to notch 20 or more points, and was the first to do so since John Marino (26) in 2019-20.
