Penguins Acquire Reilly Smith in Exchange for 2024 Third-Round Draft Pick

The Pittsburgh Penguins have acquired forward Reilly Smith from the Vegas Golden Knights in exchange for a 2024 third-round draft pick, it was announced today by President of Hockey Operations Kyle Dubas.

Smith is signed through the 2024-25 season and his contract carries an average annual value of $5 million at the NHL level.

Smith, 32, is coming off of a Stanley Cup Championship season with the Vegas Golden Knights where he recorded 26 goals, 30 assists, 56 points and was plus-11 in 78 regular-season games. His 26 goals ranked third on Vegas and his 56 points were fourth most on the team. He picked up 14 points (4G-10A) during the 2023 Stanley Cup Playoffs, including three points (2G-1A) in the Stanley Cup Final versus Florida.

The 6-foot-1, 185-pound winger joined Vegas for its inaugural season in 2017-18, serving as an alternate captain for the duration. He ranks in the top-5 in franchise history with 399 games played (4th), 124 goals (2nd), 162 assists (4th), 286 points (3rd), 27 power-play goals (2nd), 12 shorthanded goals (1st) and a plus-86 (2nd). He is also the franchise leader in playoff assists (48) and is second on the team all-time in playoff points (66).

Smith has played parts of 12 seasons in the NHL split between the Dallas Stars, Boston Bruins, Florida Panthers and Vegas, skating in 764 regular-season games and registering 473 points (200G-273A). He also has 106 games of Stanley Cup Playoff experience, where he's recorded 26 goals, 53 assists, 79 points and is plus-36. Since making his NHL debut, his 79 postseason points are tied for 19th in the league.

A native of Mimico, Ontario, Smith has notched 10 or more goals in 10 consecutive seasons, and has hit the 20-goal plateau five times and hit the 50-point plateau six times. Since the beginning of the 2016-17 season, his 13 shorthanded goals are tied for fourth in the NHL.

Smith was originally drafted by Dallas in the third round (69th overall) in the 2009 NHL Draft. Prior to his time in the NHL he enjoyed a three year collegiate career with the Miami University of Ohio from 2009-12, recording 122 points (66G-56A) in 121 games.
