Rust, 29, played in the first two games of the season and recorded one goal in the Penguins' season-opening win against the Tampa Bay Lightning.
The 5-foot-11, 192-pound forward was one of two Penguins to play in all 56 regular-season games in 2020-21, when he recorded 22 goals, 20 assists and 42 points. Rust's 22 goals and 42 points last season ranked third and fourth on Pittsburgh, respectively. The forward tallied six game-winning goals and six power-play goals in '20-21, both the second-most on the team.
Rust is a veteran of 366 career NHL games, compiling 101 goals, 112 assists and 213 points during his seven-plus season career with Pittsburgh. Since the 2019-20 season, no Penguin has scored more goals than Rust's 50. The two-time Stanley Cup champion has also tacked on 19 goals and 27 points in 72 career playoff games since 2016.
