The Pittsburgh Penguins have activated defensemen Marcus Pettersson and Chad Ruhwedel from the NHL's COVID-19 Protocol List, it was announced today by general manager Ron Hextall.

Defensemen Taylor Fedun and Juuso Riikola have both been re-assigned to the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins of the American Hockey League.
Pettersson, 25, has appeared in eight games for the Penguins this season, recording one goal, three assists, four points and a team-leading plus-7. He also scored a single game career-high three points (1G-2A) and plus-5 on October 23rd versus Toronto.
The 6-foot-3, 177-pound defenseman skated in 47 games for the Penguins last year, recording two goals, seven assists, nine points and a plus-8. His best season came in 2019-20 where Pettersson notched two goals, 20 assists, 22 points and a plus-9. Pettersson's 84 blocked shots and 106 hits were ranked third and fifth on the team, respectively. The Skellefteå, Swedan native was drafted 38th-overall by the Anaheim Ducks and has skated in 230 career NHL regular-season games between Anaheim and Pittsburgh scoring 64 points (8G-54A) with a plus-46.
Ruhwedel, 31, played in eight games for the Penguins this season prior to being placed on the NHL's COVID-19 Protocol list. The 5-foot-11, 191-pound defenseman appeared in 17 games for the Penguins last year, recording two assists and a plus-3.
A 2017 Stanley Cup Champion, Ruhwedel has played parts of 10 seasons in the NHL between the Buffalo Sabres and Penguins spending his last five in Pittsburgh. He has appeared in 18 career postseason contents, including a career-best 12 in the 2018 Stanley Cup Playoffs. His NHL playoff debut came in Game 6 of the 2017 Second Round against Washington, and he was in the lineup when Pittsburgh earned a Game 7 road victory against the Capitals at the Verizon Center.
The San Diego, California native broke into the NHL with the Sabres as an undrafted free agent following a three-year collegiate career at the University of Massachusetts-Lowell, where he served as an alternate captain in his final season. Ruhwedel has appeared in a combined 195 career NHL regular-season games between Pittsburgh and Buffalo, netting 27 points (7G-20A).
