The Pittsburgh Penguins have hired Chris Butler as a player development coach, Greg Pateryn as a professional scout and Garrett Peters as a global crossover scout, it was announced today by general manager Ron Hextall.

In his new role, the 35-year-old Butler will work closely with hockey operations advisor Trevor Daley to help develop the defensive prospects in the organization. He will report to Tom Kostopolous, the team's director of player development.
Butler, a native of St. Louis, Missouri, had spent the 2021-22 campaign as an amateur scout with the Arizona Coyotes.
Prior to his one-year stint with the Coyotes hockey operations department, Butler enjoyed an 11-year NHL career as a defenseman, appearing a total of 407 NHL games split between the St. Louis Blues, Calgary Flames and Buffalo Sabres, accumulating 86 points (14G-72A). His career culminated with a Stanley Cup Championship as a member of the Blues in 2019, where he suited up for 13 regular-season contests and was a member of the team's playoff taxi squad that season.
Drafted by Buffalo in the fourth round (96th overall) in the 2005 NHL Draft, Butler also spent six seasons in the AHL where he recorded 115 points (22G-93A) in 271 games split between the San Antonio Rampage and the Chicago Wolves. He served as captain of Chicago in 2016-17 and then captained San Antonio in 2018-19.
Pateryn, 32, joins the Penguins organization as a professional scout based out of California, and will primarily scout western conference teams. He recently concluded a 10-year professional career as a defenseman and most recently was a member of the Anaheim Ducks organization in 2021-22, splitting time between the Ducks and their AHL affiliate, San Diego, where he served as captain.
A native of Sterling Heights, Minnesota, Pateryn has appeared in a total of 290 career regular-season NHL games split between Anaheim, San Jose, Colorado, Minnesota, Dallas and Montreal, recording five goals, 39 assists and 44 points. He also has three assists in seven-career Stanley Cup Playoff games, all with Montreal.
Pateryn also spent parts of seven seasons in the AHL, where he notched 76 points (30G-46A) in 210 career regular-season games. Prior to turning pro, Pateryn enjoyed a four-year collegiate career with the University of Michigan from 2008-12.
Peters, 35, joins Pittsburgh as a global crossover scout, and will primarily scout amateur players in both North America and Europe. Prior to joining the Penguins, Peters was an amateur scout for five seasons with the St. Louis Blues from 2017-22, where he won the Stanley Cup in 2019 as a member of the hockey operations department, and served as a scout for the Halifax Mooseheads of the QMJHL from 2014-17.
A native of Riverside, Rhode Island, Peters played four seasons of junior hockey with the Halifax Mooseheads and Drummondville Voltigeurs the QMJHL from 2005-08, before playing parts of four seasons in various professional leagues including the ECHL, SPHL and FHL.
