Smith, 22, is in his first season in the Penguins organization after being acquired this offseason. With WBS, Smith has recorded 14 points (4G-10A) in 26 games played. His 14 points rank second among team defensemen.
The 5-foot-11, 180-pound defenseman has spent the previous two seasons playing in the New Jersey Devils organization (2020-22). In 2020-21, Smith recorded a career-high 23 points (2G-21A) in 48 games as a rookie for the Devils. That season, he led NHL rookie defensemen in points and was named to the NHL All-Rookie team. In 114 career NHL games, Smith has notched 43 points (7G-36A).
Smith, a first-round draft pick (17th overall) by the New Jersey Devils in 2018, played five seasons in the WHL from 2015-20 with the Spokane Chiefs. He served as captain of the Chiefs from 2018-20. Smith recorded 45 goals, 190 assists and 235 total points in 240 games in the WHL. He had his best season with Spokane in 2017-18 where he was second among WHL defensemen with 73 points (14G-59A). Smith received multiple awards during his time with Spokane, as he won the WHL defenseman of the Year in 2019 and 2020 as well as the CHL defenseman of the year in 2019.
The Lloydminster, Alberta native has represented his home country many times, including the 2020 World Junior Championship where he served as an alternate captain and won a gold medal with his team, the 2019 World Junior Championship and the World Under-18 Championship in 2017 and 2018. He was the captain of Team Canada during the 2018 World Under-18 Championship.
Caggiula, 28, is up for his second stint with Pittsburgh this season after appearing in three games from Oct. 24-28. With WBS, he has recorded four goals, 10 assists and is plus-3 in 23 games. His 14 points are tied for sixth on WBS.
The 5-foot-10, 176-pound forward has played in 281 career NHL games from 2016-22 and registered 46 goals, 45 assists and 91 points with Pittsburgh, the Edmonton Oilers, Chicago Blackhawks, Arizona Coyotes and Buffalo Sabres. The undrafted forward's best NHL season came in 2017-18 with Edmonton when he recorded career highs in games played (67), goals (13) and points (20).
Prior to turning professional, the Pickering, Ontario native played at the University of North Dakota from 2012-16. In 162 career collegiate games, Caggiula tallied 62 goals, 65 assists and 127 points.
