The 6-foot, 187-pound forward has spent the previous seven-plus seasons playing in the Carolina Hurricanes organization (2013-21). In 2020-21, McGinn recorded eight goals, five assists and 13 points in 37 games, plus tacked on three goals and four points in 11 playoff games.
McGinn's best season came in 2017-18 when he recorded a career-high 16 goals and 30 points in 80 games. In 345 career NHL games, all with Carolina, the forward has registered 51 goals, 55 assists and 106 points. McGinn has tallied 12 points (6G-6A) in 34 career playoff games. Penguins' assistant coach Mike Vellucci was the Hurricanes' assistant general manager and director of hockey operations during McGinn's first five full seasons with the Hurricanes' organization (2014-19).
The Fergus, Ontario native played parts of four seasons in the American Hockey League with the Charlotte Checkers to begin his career (2013; 2014-17). In 134 career AHL games, McGinn recorded 39 goals, 31 assists and 70 points.
McGinn was originally drafted in the second round (47th overall) by Carolina in the 2012 NHL Draft. Prior to his professional debut, he played four seasons with the Guelph Storm of the Ontario Hockey League from 2010-14. McGinn tallied 172 points (93G-79A) in 227 career OHL games, plus 18 points (9G-9A) in 27 playoff games. He represented Guelph as an alternate captain during his final three seasons and won the OHL Championship in 2013-14.
