The Pittsburgh Penguins have signed goaltender Joel Blomqvist to a three-year, entry-level contract, it was announced today by general manager Ron Hextall.
Blomqvist's entry-level contract will begin in the 2023-24 season and run through the 2025-26 campaign.

Blomqvist, 21, is currently with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins after signing an amateur tryout agreement on April 4. The goaltender completed the 2022-23 season with Kärpät of Liiga, Finland's top professional league, posting a 6-5-8 record, 2.29 goals against average, .907 save percentage and one shutout in 21 regular-season games. He also appeared in three playoff games with Kärpät.
He has played parts of the last four seasons with Kärpät of Liiga and Hermes of Mestis, Finalnd's second-tier professional league. In 45 career Liiga starts, Blomqvist has gone 14-9-12 with a 1.92 goals-against average, a .917 save percentage and six shutouts. His best season with Kärpät came in 2021-22 when he went 6-3-4 and led the league with a career-high .940 save percentage.
The 6-foot-2, 183-pound goaltender appeared in one game with WBS at the end of the 2021-22 season where he turned away 25 of 27 shots faced in a loss to the Springfield Thunderbirds.
The native of Uusikaarlepyy, Finland was selected to represent Team Finland at the 2022 IIHF World Junior Championship prior to its cancellation, which would have marked his second consecutive trip to the WJC as he was selected in 2021 for Team Finland, where he won a bronze medal. Blomqvist has also represented Finland on the international stage at the 2019 World U17 Hockey Challenge, where he won silver, and the 2019 World Under-18 Championship.
Blomqvist was originally drafted by the Penguins in the second round (54th overall) of the 2020 NHL Draft.
