Haggerty, 25, enjoyed a strong preseason with Pittsburgh this year, scoring in each of his two appearances while adding an assist for a team-high (tied) three points. The Penguins assigned him to the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins following his two-point game (1G-1A) on September 23 versus Detroit. Prior to signing this contract, Haggerty had been playing on an American Hockey League contract with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins.
Last year, the 6-foot, 201-pound Haggerty posted the highest AHL totals of his career in his second season with WBS, scoring 16 times and adding 21 assists for 37 points in 47 games. In two seasons with WBS, Haggerty has produced 27 goals, 33 assists, 60 points and a plus-28 in 105 regular-season contests.
Originally from Stamford, Connecticut, Haggerty has accumulated four seasons of AHL experience with WBS, Rockford and Hartford. He has 51 goals, 55 assists and 106 points in 217 career regular-season appearances, plus another seven points (2G-5A) in 21 playoff contests.
Haggerty skated for three seasons of collegiate hockey at RPI, where he was named an NCAA Second-Team All-American and First-Team All-ECAC during his final campaign in 2013-14. That year, he tallied 28 goals and 43 points in 35 games. His 28 goals that year ranked fourth in the entire NCAA, trailing only Calgary Flames forward Johnny Gaudreau (36), then-Robert Morris Colonial Cody Wydo (31) and Pens' 2017 Stanley Cup championship member Josh Archibald (29).
Haggerty skated for two seasons with the United States National Team Development Program from 2009-11. He helped the Americans capture gold at the 2011 Under-18 World Junior Championships by scoring twice in six games.
His father, Roger Haggerty, played four seasons of minor-league baseball in the Boston Red Sox system from 1986-89.
